Setting chromium as default browser

Asked by Nikolai Prokoschenko

Currently, Chrome's packages for Ubuntu include an alternative for x-www-browser. Chromium does not:

$ update-alternatives --list x-www-browser
/usr/bin/epiphany-gecko
/usr/bin/firefox-3.0
/usr/bin/firefox-3.5
/usr/bin/google-chrome
/usr/bin/konqueror
/usr/bin/midori
/usr/bin/opera
/usr/bin/xlinks2

I'd like to have an alternative for chromium since it updates more often and I can surely use it as a default browser now that flash and user scripts mostly work :-)

Can't you just set it in System -> Preferences -> Preferred Application?

Fix committed as lp:chromium-browser #229:

* Add chromium-browser as a x-www-browser alternative for non-Gnome users
  - add debian/chromium-browser.postinst
  - add debian/chromium-browser.prerm
