Cardapio doesn't appear in my panel! I get a weird dot instead.

1) Open a terminal and remove all Cardapio instances from the panel by hand, like this:

$ grep -Ri cardapio ~/.gconf/apps/panel/applets/ | sed 's/%gconf.*//' | xargs rm -rf

2) Then log out and log back in.

3) Finally, re-add Cardapio to the panel.
