How to solve the problem of blinking cursor in a black screen in Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS

Asked by ModyKing

I am completely stuck at the black screen with a blinking cursor and I can't login to my personal data. I tried to login using Live CD and it seems that there is a problem with the hard disk.

/dev/loop0 squashfs /rofs
/dev/sda1 (not mounted)
/dev/sda5 (not mounted)
/dev/sdb1 vfat UBUNTU 16_0 /cdrom 96E9-5126

How can I solve this problem?

You can see the output from "boot-repair" in http://paste2.org/GcpgcVkJ and the output from "dmesg" in http://paste2.org/JBMjM82x

This does not look good, both boot repair and dmesg show signs of problems with the hard disk

e.g.
14. Mounting failed: mount: unknown filesystem type ''
158.Unknown MBR on /dev/sda
and
586.[ 6.768095] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6
587.[ 6.768174] ata1.00: BMDMA stat 0x24
588.[ 6.768239] ata1.00: failed command: READ DMA
589.[ 6.768308] ata1.00: cmd c8/00:01:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 512 in
590. res 51/84:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/e0 Emask 0x10 (ATA bus error)
591.[ 6.768406] ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR }
592.[ 6.768471] ata1.00: error: { ICRC ABRT }
etc.

Suggestions:
Check the cabling of the hard disk, eventually try connecting it to another disk controller or port
Use data recovery tools to try saving your data (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery)
