Parallel Printer Message: "Unable to open device file "/dev/lp0": Permission denied"

Asked by Graham M. Whittenberg

I defined a parallel printer that is connected to /dev/lp0. When I do the test printer a print job is created, but never prints. I get a message that the printer may not be connected, but when I go to Printer - CUPS 1.3.7 I get this message when I select the printer: "Unable to open device file "/dev/lp0": Permission denied". Fine, but how do I grant permmission?

If the message can be produced, someone should know why and what to do about it.

I'm sorry, but this isn't the place for such a question, this is for the Version Control System Bazaar.

Just about what I expected from Linux. You guys are as bad as Microsoft.

You could have at least provided a URL. Thank a lot.

I probably could, if I actually knew what you where looking for (is this even Ubuntu related?)

If it is, then the place to ask is: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu

How did you land on this page?

Sorry about being short, but I have been fighting this problem for three
weeks.

I was working with the Cups Common UNIX Printing Subsystem 1.3.7,
http://localhost:631/ on my newly installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop
Edition (64-bit), but I am not sure where I found the Launchpad URL.

Desperation works that way I guess.

Anyway thanks for the web site. I will try that URL.

Graham,

Firstly, the Bazaar VCS project has nothing to do with the Linux kernel. It is a cross-platform tool, developed by people with an interest in free software. These people may happen to use the GNU/Linux operating system, but that does not in any way tie them to the kernel project.

Secondly, as Martin has said, you did not give us enough information in the initial question to be able to redirect you to somewhere more appropriate. This message could have been produced by any number of GNU/Linux distributions, and we wouldn't want to waste yet more people's time by redirecting you incorrectly.

Thirdly, both Martin and myself are unpaid volunteers for the Bazaar project. We choose to write code for the project, triage bugs in the project and even answer questions irrelevant to the project, and are able to carry out all of these activities in a civilised and polite manner. I do not feel that this is too much to expect of others who are involving themselves.

I'm glad that you have chosen to try GNU/Linux, and will be more than happy to help you find help from the correct forum if you give us the information to do so. Until then, I simply ask that you be aware that the majority of the people who you encounter in the free software community are not as well paid as Microsoft support staff are.

Regards,

Daniel Watkins

OK, so you are not paid for your services, Launchpad does not ask for
information it asks for a question. If you are interested in saving
users and yourselves time you might do well to request the system being
used and how the user of Launchpad got to your site.

I will say that Martin did give me a URL and I posed the question on
that site.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.
