Do you have admin access?
From the snippet it seems like you don't.

thank you. yes i have administrative access and i just created a password to it
to be sure. i get same 'access denied' result. i thought it might be that i'm
running xp_home rather than xp_professional, but msdn indicates that should be
ok.

months ago i tried and failed to install ms sql server express and gave up
because of 'administrator access'. also the directory of C:/Program
Files/mysql/MySQL Server 5.1/mysql-repo/mysql-5.1/.bzr/checkout is

Directory of C:\Program Files\mysql\MySQL Server 5.1\mysql-repo\mysql-5.1\.bzr\

and there is no text 'limbo' nor 'new-25' within 'dirstate'.

I think XP has some special access restrictions on "Program Files". I suggest you checkout the source somewhere else, like inside your user directory.
