Is there a forum for this package? It would be nice to ask questions in a user supported way and not this blind "launchpad-bot" manner.

I'd like to be able to let byobu autolaunch when I ssh in, but still be able to drop to a bare metal session -- without being kicked back to my client machine.

You can use these Launchpad Questions, though I much prefer AskUbuntu.com.

To answer your question, if you want a "baremetal session", try this:

 $ ssh -t yourhost.com bash

This will not run byobu but give you your baremetal session.
