CD start hangs -- buffer I/O error on fd0

Bug Description

Starting 7.04 beta CD on Intel D875PBZ with Pentium 4 3GHz, CD, 36GB WDC SATA Raptor, no floppy, startup fails, repeats "Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0" every 20-30 seconds. disabling floppy support in BIOS causes boot to shell with error "can't access tty; job control turned off"
If I install a floppy drive, tries to read from it, then bails out to the shell with the "can't access tty..." message.

Tested with:
Ubuntu Live Daily Build 03-Apr-2007 17:51

I get the same error. I have not tested what disabling floppy disk drive support does.

Specs:
-ASUS P5W-DH
-C2D E6600
-PATA DVD drive
-SATA HDD

Previously in other builds (6.06, 6.10, 7.04 beta + daily builds), my DVD drive was never detected. I believe this error is similar to the one the ASUS P5B series had, but the P5B supposedly has it fixed.

For a previous, recent daily build:
I tried installing the alternate CD off a separate HDD, before, and it stalled when trying to detect a floppy disk drive. I also tried installing off a 1GB+ USB drive and it got stuck at trying to detect my DVD drive, for some reason.

I meant a separate partition.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Now that the final version of Feisty Fawn is available we were wondering if this issue still exists. Thanks in advance.

It still exists up to the daily build of Gutsy June 4, 2007 (haven't tried later than that). I've been following the following thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=415009&highlight=tty , and it tells me that this problem became more widespread after the final build of Feisty Fawn. I've only tried installing a floppy drive and booting up with a floppy disk loaded, and that did not change anything.

It still exists in Gutsy Tribe 3. As I wrote in Bug #95857 it affects both my desktop and one of the laptops. Its an important issue, because system looks like crashed - for 60 seconds (really? feels more like several minutes...) the screen is completely blank and you don't hear the cd working. User has no idea what's going on (on the beginning I was just restarting, because I was sure that the boot process just froze). Only after that period user sees two "Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0" errors, and system continue to boot.
