panel menu style not applied (no icons and background)

The panel indicator is also functioning as it should: changing the icon theme in preferences will change the icon in the panel accordingly.
However, the menu that appears when clicking the panel indicator has no style to it, meaning no icons are depicted and the background is default (grey iso black as the other menus from other panel indicators). Font is also different.
When (un)mounting a folder by clicking a menu item, the notification has again the right style applied to it, including icons.
