I'm getting this more often as well and it's about one of the most annoying bugs I have *ever* experienced.

Forgive me if this is stupid (I can't help that, I'm afraid) and at the risk of tempting fate...
I haven't had a crash in a couple of days. Only two things have changed since the last crash: firstly I disabled the Flash plugin in Firefox, and secondly the wireless chip on my motherboard seems to have died so I've been using a wired connection for the past couple of days.
Is it possible that either might have had a bearing on the crashes?

Well let's give it another week and see if you get another crash.

This backtrace doesn't reveal too much. Maybe a full backtrace would show more info. If the crashes start happening again see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance in collecting one. (Ignore the directions about apport, and skip down to the procedure using gdb.)

Thanks Bryce. Yes I have regularly been having more crashes.

After a period of a few days without a crash, a couple of days ago I uninstalled xul-ext-ubufox and almost immediately got a crash but I have no idea if it's related. I re-installed xul-ext-ubufox in case that was it, but I got another crash yesterday.

A while ago I uninstalled sendmail via synaptic. But when I had a crash yesterday afternoon, for a fleeting moment I saw the black screen just before the Ubuntu login screen appeared, and I saw the words sendmail and error. This surprised me so I searched my disk for sendmail and found a lot of files. There's a script called sendmail in etc/cron.daily and another in etc/init.d and also some files with names like K19sendmail in etc/rc0.d and etc/rc1.d and so on. Is it safe to delete all these? Or would that break Ubuntu in any way?

Bryce - I've had several more crashes. They're happening on a daily basis - sometimes two or three times a day. I'm thinking about giving up on Ubuntu and trying something else. I read the link you posted, but there's a problem: in the gdb instructions it states, "Now do what you need to make the X server crash" but as these crashes are so random I cannot do that. Unless I'm reading things wrongly?

Also, /etc/X11/core does not exist - would the core dump be somewhere else? How do I find the core dump? - and there is nothing in var/crash after these crashes.

I'd really appreciate some help with understanding the instructions where it states "Another problem can be that the default maximum size of core files has been set to 0". Can I tell if it has been set to zero?

I'm still getting crashes - three this morning shortly after logging on. The only app open was Firefox, and this crashed as it was loading, taking X with it. This also happened yesterday. After logging in three times, the crashes stopped. Weird.

I'd appreciate any advice as per #8.
