Bug Description

Presumably what is happening is that the window manager is dying, but not sure how to prove that.
This also happens with the gnome classic window manager.

It does not happen if I use Xfce.
It does not happen if I hibernate / wake from hibernate.

Are you using Natty? There was a known random logout issue with Natty, but it was fixed with updates.

I'm using Oeneric, not Natty, and have all of the latest updates.
This is a system that was originally a Feisty install, and has been upgraded sequentially without any major issues until now.

I just tried it again to make sure it's still happening, and it is.

Is there any logging or diagnostic output that I can use to help track down what's happening?

Here's another clue, and a possible workaround.

If I do this:
"switch users" (which takes me to a login screen)
"suspend" (the button at the top right of the login screen)
... the system suspends ok.
I resume from suspend
I login again.

Now the session is restored correctly.
