Bug Description

using Oneiric Ocelot (11.10), upgrade from Natty on Oct 23 2011.
Question in Launchpad #175882 describes in detail what happened and the suggested action to take.

I wonder if this problem, one I can live with, is related to the bug reported in bug #874145

The icon does not show, however clicking on the place where it should be provides the complete menu.
It appears, that my name is overlaid on the icon.

On the affected machine, please open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command:
apport-collect 880917
After doing so, please verify that information was automatically attached to this bug report and that the "apport-collected" tag was automatically added (please do *not* manually add it yourself). If this is the case, then you can go ahead and change this bug's status back from Incomplete to New. The automatically attached information should hopefully make this report complete enough to be worked on by a developer.

Before entering password on start up, the panel shows from left to right: The computer name, then on the right a star icon with : onscreen keyboard, High contrast and screen reader; then the speaker icon, turned on, the time and then the missing shutdown icon; with Suspend, Hibernate and Shut Down

After entering the password the shutdown icon disappears, replaced by an envelope, the internet connection icon, date and time and butting up against the end of the screen my name.

As of today the right hand side of the panel has disappeared completely, no name, no icon, no functionality

I, just this morning upgraded another computer to 11.10, The shutdown radio button on the panel is missing also.
Clicking on the blank space where it should be does result in the complete menu dropping down.
This is becoming more urgent as it seems to happen more often.
I have one more computer to upgrade, it is an old Dell and will be done next weekend.
Will see what happens.

In another bug report, which was attached to this one, I described the loss of functionality of a computer. That was a brand new laptop, and the loss was not a major problem, now it is. On the PC named ea-laptop, this evening I was using compiz-config(I think the name is) the last screen has preferences, that screen would not revert to the main screen no matter what I tried. Suddenly without my help the screen flashed a few times and copiz-config was gone AND SO WAS EVERYTHING ELSE, with the exception of the top panel with only "File Edit View Go Bookmarks and Help. I cannot bring the launcher out, nothing will respond. I have essentially lost my whole system, At this point I used ctrl +alt+t to get terminal and provide the second of the two Dependencies.txt files.

Th first of these two was generated on a desktop which has been running Oneiric since it was released. I turned this system on to see if I had installed Compiz-config and the system came up with everything gone also.

The problem to me has now become critical and should be investigated ASAP

The problem regarding the loss of the Unity launcher and panel was resolved in Bug 886440 upon re-enabling the Unity plugin in CCSM. The only other remaining issue is the loss of the picture of the shutdown button in the top panel.

Yes the problem still exists in a slightly different form:

I originally upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 LTS Beta 1. The system worked reasonably well, except for loosing HDMI sound.

All upgrades have been installed and all seemed fine, last update was yesterday, this morning the system would not start.

What happened , It booted asked for password accepted the password as OK, then showed the screen background without any top panel or Launcher. No amount of clicking would bring them back, right click provides the allows for changing desktop bacground as well as create new folder, and starting new document.

I tried the new document, it offered to open with gedit, or another choice, so I went looking for Libre Office and the empty document was opened, I entered a few words and saved the file. The I closed it and tried to open a spreadsheet. There was no access to the spreadsheet file.

Then I tried to open the untitled document with Firefox, it started and had access to the web.

I can through this process start any program listed in the list of othe applications.

I am at a loss as to how to get my system back, pleas help.

Okay, seems like your computer doesn't support Unity. In that case, you need to stick to Unity 2D.

Can you post the output of this terminal command?

/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

The strange part is, that two days ago (28Mar) an update of some 170 changes was installed, with an additional 90 updates yesterday, and after re starting the system all of my facilities came back and to this point are working. I lost no data, have had no problems and I would say that this problem is now solved.
