Bug Description

I've tried to reset unity for this account using

unity --reset
unity --reset-icons

but that didn't help.

When I create a new user account the icons are shown properly. Also many of the folder icons are broken as well, for example the home folder and also for a folder on my desktop, it's being shown as if it is a file. But the most annoying thing is that I'm missing the shutdown button.

I've attached a screenshot of my current desktop. Please note, the Misc file on my desktop is actually a folder, which is not being shown correctly.

Ok. I managed to get the Icon Back by changing the Theme.

System Settings -> Appearance -> Change Themes to [Radiance] / [Ambiance].

That worked.

Hope it works for you too.

Same here.

Also some icon pictures are missing. The top menu theme as well as window theme is broken.
I guess the themes are not installed correctly or are not working.

Screenshot attached.

Thank you for your bug report, what icon theme do you use (gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme)? Could you add your .xsession-errors to the bug?

Thanks Mikko, it seems your gnome-settings-daemon has an issue, you should open a bug about that:

"(gnome-settings-daemon:1800): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 525 error_code 8 request_code 143 minor_code 22)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)"

do you use a NX config?

Thanks for advice, bug #877143 now opened.

I have no idea what NX config is :-)

As requested my .xsession-errors and the output of the icon-theme:

testaccount@ph-l029:~$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme
'gnome'

To be able to work I made my old home-dir the home-dir of my new account (which I created to see if a new account had all the icons).

I've not tried the workaround, since then the bug will probably be fixed and I won't be able to check for any problems (my home directory is a bit too big, so I can't just copy it either).

Bilal Akhtar (bilalakhtar) wrote :

As already discussed, this is not a bug in the session menu, instead its just a fault with user configuration. There's no issue with the ubuntu-mono-* icon themes.

As for Mikko's problem as demonstrated in this screenshot:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/83037008/desktop.png

It is a settings daemon bug, which is bug #877143 .

Hence, this bug is no longer relevant.

Changed in indicator-session:

Bilal,

Yes it's a settings issue. But I regard it as a bug in the upgrade procedure, since the settings where ok in 11.04, but where broken in 11.10. I've not had any upgrade issue's with Ubuntu till 11.10 and liked to "brag" about that as a selling argument for Ubuntu, now I can no longer say that upgrades on Ubuntu are pain free.

I don't see how this can possibly be a fault with user configuration. The device menu shouldn't be invisible, no matter what your settings are.
