[workaround and cause]

if you delete the file '/var/lib/alsa/asound.state' and reboot, the alsa driver is properly loaded. then, you can tweak the mixer settings to get sound (for me, i have to enable surround sound).

however, the next time you reboot, the sound goes away again and you have to repeat the process.

thus, i believe the problem lies with the alsa startup script. if the file '/var/lib/alsa/asound.state' exists at boot, alsa tries to load it but gets confused and alsa doesn't properly configure. maybe the file isn't properly formatted; i know it refers to controls that don't exist on my card.

the problem is a race condition with the init script. now that init scripts are run in parallel, a kludge was added to /etc/init.d/alsa-utils which simply waits until the file system is available. some other condition must also need to be satisfied. this is confirmed by the fact that the loss of sound for most people first started with Edgy.

My sound worked fine in edgy and went away in feisty, I saw someone with the exact same card in the forums and almost the same model computer and their fix was adding the following line to their /etc/modprobe.d/alsabase file:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack

This made my sound work also, but when I put headphones in my pc speakers still play just like his. He said his mic wouldn't work I haven't tried that yet. Seemed to me like more tweaking of the alsabase file would probably fix everything totally but I have no idea what I am doing I just added a line to a text file. If anyone would like me to run some commands on my computer and paste my outputs here just lemee know I'd be more than happy to help, I was about to go back to edgy to get sound again but I might hold off for alittle with this glimmer of hope, thanks.

Hi,
I have the same card. Nothing seems to work.
I cant find that file Alvin was talking about:
var/lib/alsa/asound.state
so I cant delete it and try

I am really willing to try help solve this problem, there are quite a few people with this problem.
Will try anything anyone suggests.

unfortunately, there are so many different bugs with the current ubuntu sound system you may have more than on problem, which makes things tough to figure out. i have three different computers, none especially exotic, and all three had at least to or three different problems (although my ferrari 4000 now works out of the box in feisty). you may want to check some of the other bug reports.

ignore my comment about a 'race condition'; i was mistaken. however, at least one problem is the 'var/lib/alsa/asound.state' problem mentioned above.

I can confirm that this fix:

"/etc/modprobe.d/alsabase file:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack"

Works for my laptop in Feisty. I have not tried it in Gutsy tribe 4. I have noticed that the dial on the front of the laptop does control the sound, but there isn't any granular control of the volume. It jumps from quiet, to medium, to loud. It goes completely quite 1/2 way down the dial.

My machine also seemed to take much longer to load to the desktop.

I will try an Edgy live CD. I might be downgrading if the audio support is better.

I also noticed that I have a "switch" for headphones in the volume control. When I turn on the switch, sound is heard from the laptop speakers and the headphones. When it is unchecked, it only sounds from the laptop speakers. I imagine this is the headphone bug I've read about somewhere. I am guessing there is a similar problem with the microphone.

When you plug in headphones, does the sound stop playing from the laptop
speakers? If so, I'd like to compare our fixes to see if I missed
something.
