Bug Description

Unity doesn't show *any* sys tray icons any more, not even after a full system reboot (so this isn't bug #783908). Also the battery power indicator no longer shows, although there seems to be a small gap left for it between the mail and sound indicators.

'gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist' show "['skype', 'pidgin', 'Pidgin', 'Skype']".

Adding 'all' to the list doesn't help, either.

The only thing I recall doing recently other than applying updates is to remove everything related to evolution, except for evolution-data-server-common, because indicator-datetime depends on it.

This is high priority for me, because Skype isn't integrated into anywhere else so I have to use it from the systray.

Unity is now showing some systray icons, but nothing for skype. It is showing an enormous Pidgin icon and a blank black area.

Perhaps my gsettings are borked, because skype is no longer showing up in my natty systray either. (natty and oneiric are sharing a common home folder.) And dconf-editor can't see the key com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist, although gsettings can.

Just to correct my previous statement: dconf-editor can see systray-whitelist and it has 'Skype' listed. It's in desktop/unity/panel and of course the schema is com.canonical.Unity.Panel. Nevertheless, neither Natty nor Oneiric show the skype icon anymore in the systray.

The skype icon is now back, along with a grossly-oversized pidgin icon and an extra systray battery indicator icon. I've no idea what changed, except that I changed systray-whitelist to ['all'] about three reboots ago.

wait for unity 4.14.0 to release and come to you and let us know if
the issue is still there.

4.14 doesn't fix it: the skype icon sometimes appears, and sometimes doesn't appear, just like before. The pidgin icon usually appears now but is still oversized.

FWIW, unity-2d doesn't show systray icons either. I logged this as a separate bug, #847525, assuming that it is a different app that renders the unity-2d bar.

In my case, the Skype icon shows, and there's only a space between the skype one and dropbox's one. The one in the middle should be pidgin's, and it's there but invisible. I can click on it and interact.

Transmission-gtk is shown as well.

my whitelist setting via dconf includes Skype and Pidgin.

In my case Skype shows for a while (after a few minutes of inactivity the icon dissapear). The same happend with Dropbox. Pidgin never shows. Transmission seems to work ok.
my whitelist is set to all.

When I upgraded to Oneiric, upon first reboot I automatically chose the unity 2d desktop, not the default.
I set the whitelist to 'All'. Just a couple icons appeared, but not, for instance, pidgin.

The other day I wanted to check out the default desktop environment, and there it is: my pidgin systray icon.

So, maybe there's some gl thing going on here or what?
