wow, managed to find this random thing which FIXES IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

edit /etc/default/grub and change the line to include "pci=use_crs":

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash pci=use_crs"

run 'sudo update-grub' and reboot.

fixed it for me.

upgraded to oneiric and it doesn't work anymore. pci=use_crs doesn't seem to help. device does not show up in /proc/asound/cards

ah, so I need to blacklist xgifb. somehow that experimental driver was getting loaded, crashing, and keeping the sound driver from working.

timmy@timmy-desktop:~$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom
blacklist xgifb

Hi timmy,

"pci=use_crs" shouldn't make any difference on your system, because it was already automatically enabled even without "pci=use_crs".

If you still have an issue with sound or xgifb, please attach a complete dmesg log.
