VLC crashes on HTTP authentication failures (401)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

With VLC's Open Network Stream...
1. Try to open a media URL which requires HTTP authentication, e.g. http://myserver/file.mp3 Crash!
2. Try to open the same URL, but this time provide incorrect authentication details in the URL, e.g. http://me@wrong:myserver/file.mp3 Crash!
3. Try again, but provide correct details, e.g. http://me@secret:myserver/file.mp3 Success!

I've got a crash report for case 1 which I shall attempt to attach.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu.
