Bug Description

Installled Ubuntu 11.04 on Acer One 522. Sound is not working properly.
Internal Mic is not working.
I get no sound on headphone jack.
Connecting to headphone jack does not disable internal laudspeaker
Acer 522 has just a mono speaker. But instead of a mix of both channels I get just the left channel

I have not tested external mic.

Ref. #7 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/775788/comments/7

Please note I don't have Ubuntu running on my 522 but I have the same "Codec" or sound card model = Conexant CX20584. When I set the sound card model to be dell-vostro I have working jack sensing. I have not tried the mic thought.

Try this:

Add "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro" into alsa configuration file. "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"

Then reboot.

Check your pulse audio settings with "pavucontrol" command. There are two sound cards on this machine, the hdmi output and the regular sound card, obviously you need to enable the correct card if you don't have sound at first.

---

If this does not work for you, you might try one of the other models related to "Conexant 5066" (source http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt).

Conexant 5066
=============
  laptop Basic Laptop config (default)
  hp-laptop HP laptops, e g G60
  asus Asus K52JU, Lenovo G560
  dell-laptop Dell laptops
  dell-vostro Dell Vostro
  olpc-xo-1_5 OLPC XO 1.5
  ideapad Lenovo IdeaPad U150
  thinkpad Lenovo Thinkpad

---

For any one else finding this post, the above applies if you got the CX20584 card:
cat /proc/asound/card1/codec#0 | grep Codec

I tried my own suggestions this evening and installed Ubuntu 11.04. Specifying sound card model "dell-vostro" did not help at all, neither did trying one of the other ones as well. Strangely, there where no changes in available options in alsamixer too.

When I did the same thing in OpenSUSE 11.4 - changing the model gave me different options in alsamixer and specifying "dell-vostro" gave me working jack plug sensing.

Ubuntu behave differently apparently.

Sorry about posting several times in a row, but I've found out that "options snd-hda-intel model=,dell-vostro" is working in Debian unstable with this sound card and I got jack plug sensing. The difference is the comma between equal sign and dell-vostro. I didn't know it made a difference so I ignored the comma in previous testing.

Thanks for your hints! We come a bit closer.
Indeed this helps to get sound out of headphone. Unfortunatly there is just the left signal on both ears.
After unplug the headphone the loudspeaker doesn't start again.
Also the internal Micro seems to keep off working.

Yes, I found the drivers to be somewhat sensitive. If I run GDM3 and liquorix kernel from liquorix.net I loose jack plug sensing (using "startx" works fine however). Left and right works in head phones, but not from internal speakers - I only have left speaker. Mic still not tested. [Debian unstable]

@arno: Does it make a difference if you try "options snd-hda-intel model=olpc-xo-1_5,dell-vostro"? I found this to work with Fedora 15 64-bit.

Update: The above worked for me for a while, and now I can not get it to work anymore. I apology for the spam.

Don't worry about your postings - they are welcome.
Both options behave a bit strange: With:
"options snd-hda-intel model=olpc-xo-1_5,dell-vostro
I got jack sensitive stereo sound on headphone. After unplug I had sound on speaker again. After a 2nd plugin/plugout I have no speaker sound anymore - until reboot. After reboot the sound jack sensing doesn't work anymore.

But if I remember right, I had the same issue with your first option, that it is not working anymore.

The other problem is to mix the right channel to the only available one speaker. And not to forget the micro

Your result sound familiar to what I've seen during testing different module settings, so with luck one setting might work across distributions.

You might be interested in testing "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop,dell-vostro position_fix=0,1" too. Jack plug sensing have worked without problems with this module option since yesterday on my Fedora 15 installation.

I haven't test this multiple times and after restart. But this is the first time I get sound from Micro!. Although I boosted settings to max it could be louder, but at least there is sound and I could plugin/out headphone multiple times.
I think the micro jack isn't sensed, but this is not so important for me.

More important it would be the L/R problem of the speaker:

Given what I have read from the apport information gathered, and the description of the problem, I think its a duplicate of bug #741825, and will mark this bug as such. Please read bug #741825 to get a better idea of what is going on with what is in fact a chipset bug.

Thanks.

Thanks for referring. Probably you are right - at least partly.

But at least on of the issues ( mixing a mono signal out of left and right, as there is just a mono speaker inside) is special for this ACER One 522 device. It seems to be not possible to achive this by adjusting settings that are available on Gnome Desktop.

I started a bug on the ALSA bug tracker a while ago for this: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=5324

A mini-patch is provided that makes the 522 be detected as "ideapad", apparently a catch-all for Acer devices. This causes the headphone and mic jack sense to work - but not always. As far as I can tell, there's a bigger issue that causes the driver to "lose" events and stop processing them because the event counter doesn't match. Fortunately, the jack sense detection routine is always called during initalization, so at least the state during bootup (or module load) will stick.

If you don't want to patch ALSA, can you guys try model=ideapad and test if jack sense during bootup and/or runtime works? Please also check your syslog if the driver is really using ideapad mode. It didn't work for me, that's why I patched ALSA instead.

i use the model=laptop,dell-vostro position_fix=0,1 and the plug sensing seams to work

regarding the issue that the internal microphne dosnt work. I found out to unlock the stereo channels for recording and ONLY boost the left channel the right channel for recoring is to 0%
then the mic will record your voice

The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic...

Just go to:

Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager

And search and mark for installation:

linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic

tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the description which should inform what name to install...

If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to terminal and type:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add or change the following:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes

Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work.

Bye and have lots of fun with Ubuntu (the best).

@Miguel Lopes Moreira

there is no linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic listed in synaptic. I have latest kernel ....-13 installed.

all entries under linux-backports-modules for ....-13 kernel pertain to either wireless or some other devices or are for older kernel versions.

am I missing anything please ?
