Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Skype icon is not displayed in notification area of gnome panel. The problem appeared after upgrade to Natty, before this it worked fine. Other icons (e.g. pidgin) seem to be displayed correctly.

Running N instances of Skype causes N-1 icons in the panel to appear. Skype can get confused with multiple instances using the same login, though.

The first Skype icon appears to exist as a 1 pixel wide icon. It's very hard to right-click on the icon, but it does exist.

I've tried to start two instances and still now icon appears, not even 1px icon.

I'm using gnome2; not unity. For me, it appears in the "Notification Area" applet of the panel. The 1px icon is grey on grey. The Skype style is "Desktop Settings", and it's configured to start minimised in the system tray.

There are still a few apps that appear there instead of the "Indicator Applet"

Skype version is beta 2.2.0.25, which comes from skype 2.2.0.25-1maverick1, which comes from the Ubuntu Partners repository. No later package seems to be available.

32-bit OS.

I can confirm this bug using natty 64bit with "ubuntu classic"/gnome2.
It is also true for Opera, the Icon does show more often, but also vanishes from time to time.

Anyway I found a solution for the time being. (ubuntu natty 11.04/64 bit/gnome2)

The configuration of my top panel is [from left to right]:

[Main Menu] [ Notification Area] [Indicator Applet Complete]

The key point is the Notification Area. If it is not locked you can move it. If you give it enough space to display the skype icon, it will appear. The problem is that it doesn't move/resize automatically. Try it. It worked for me.

N.B. It's not dynamic, you have to quit skype and open it again.

I tried a lot of configurations, at least I really left enough space left
and right of the notification area. whatever I did did not make the skype
icon larger that 1 px (restarting skype for every try).
