Bug Description

with 2.6.38 every session has problems with this kernel log:

with 2.6.35-28 as kernel, i only get:
[ 307.634697] [drm:intel_prepare_page_flip] *ERROR* Prepared flip multiple times

unity does not work, gnome with effects does not work, too. gnome-2d works, but with graphic errors (flicker, white space over the gui which vanished on mouseover, etc.)

with maverick everything worked okay even with some desktop effects.

the hardware is:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

I'm experiencing this bug on a Lenovo X40 where I have just upgraded to Natty Narval, which has the following graphic chip reported by lspci:
Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Kernel version is 2.6.38-8-generic

maybe the bug should be split, as it describes two kernel version.
to clarify:

2.6.38 is UNUSABLE: GPU hangs all the time

2.6.35: Is usable(with gnome 2D at least), but produces smaller rendering errors due to page_flipping problems. This leads to minor graphic glitches as parts of the upper panel disappear and show the background-image and are fixed when rerendered (hover over launcher-icon, or open the menu in case of a glitch below the "System" Menu)

I've recently installed some update pushed automatically into my system and the intel drivers were part of it.
That basically solved my problems as I don't experience any crash any longer.

with .35 or with .38 kernel?

I will try it as soon as possible, it would be great if its really solved.

Allo (allo) wrote :

okay, .38 seems to work at the moment. At least after a short test no gpu hung errors. one render error in kernellog (which i did not see visually). Unity does not work, but maybe unity thinks an intel-gpu isn't fast enough for unity.

The kernel version is 2.6.38-8-generic and the update intel driver package is xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu7.1

Hope this helps.

Allo, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

apport did not work, and at the moment i do not even know where the bug happend, because its getting quite old.

Have a look at the arch linux bug linked above, its marked as "fixed" so they seem to have a fix for the issue.
