Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

When changing many of the effects settings in ccsm, the windows all "blink" for a second as the effects are applied, this has always happened. The problem I'm having is when the top panel comes back, it's blank except for some pixel garbage on the left hand side. Nothing I do, even using the Switch Users feature will bring it back. I end up having to reboot.

Turning the "Blur Windows" setting on or off will do it every time, as will most others. Just tried it with the latest updates and the same thing happened.

An update: I installed an nvidia card to replace the ATI card that I was having some performance problems with. This issue is still present and repeatable 100% of the time with the nvidia card (proprietary driver).

This occurs when you enable/disable plugins like ”Screenshot“, “Unity MT Grab handles” or “Title bar info”. As seen in the screenshot of comment #6 (I took it), elements in top panel (like the menus and the Ubuntu button) still work --you can press Alt+F and the “File” menu comes up, as usual. But the panel is blank until you reboot.

This happened to me today when I enabled the "Resize Info" plugin.

Incidentally, one interesting thing not mentioned before is that the top panel is drawn correctly *during* the workspace switch animation, and then disappears again.

A workaround is to restart unity with Alt+F2 unity <Enter> -- better than rebooting anyway.

Other way to make a workaround is to activate the compiz fusion icon in the unity's top bar systray. I activate all the icons with this command:

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"

I restarted and the compiz fusion icon is now in the systray in the top bar of unity. When the top bar turns black, you just need to rigth click in the icon and select "Reload window manager"

I attached an screenshot.

Thanks for the workaround Marius. I can now test Compiz plugins in the Guest account.

BTW, it was never necessary to restart, re-logging in did the trick.

I also find that the 'Applications' and 'Files & Folders' launcher items disappear. Super+A and Super+F also fail to bring up Dash. However, these can be accessed by clicking the Ubuntu logo or pressing Super to bring up Dash, then selecting 'More Apps' or 'Find Files'.

marcosvega, that won't be very helpful if the Compiz Fusion icon itself disappears.

Output from the terminal.

On 2 lines I added space-hash-comment to note when I did something. See lines starting with space-hash (' #'):
 # Enabling wobbly windows.
 # Starting second instance of Unity.

The second instance is to show what happens when using Marius' workaround. I don't know whether that's useful.

HTH.
James.

that is not an issue anymore. Now unity may crash but it does not ruin the screen.
