Bug Description

The 3.2.5 release of gramps has been available for months,
and 3.2.5 has been in the Debian pool since 2/17/2011, so
I wonder when you plan to make it available in the Ubuntu
repository, which still has 3.2.3?

I can confirm this. The current version in the universe repository for both Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 (alpha1) is gramps (3.2.3) (ubuntu version -1 in 10.10 and -4 in 11.04)

There is a downloadable .deb specifically packaged for Ubuntu 10.10 at the Gramps Sourceforge website. Maybe you would add that version to your PPA?

Gramps in Ubuntu hasn't been updated for 19 weeks - that's a while, looks like it needs an active maintainer.

This bug *hasn't* been ACKed by the release team, changing status back to NEW.

Some comments to the requesters:
It's rather late in the release cycle, and the description doesn't have much justification as to why 3.2.5 should be included in natty instead of 3.2.3 or who'll make it happen and keep an eye on its bugs. If there is a good reason why this should happen, please make it clear.

As the original poster, I only asked a "question".

I did not make a request.

Somebody else decided to file this "bug" about it.

As I -- and at least one of the other responders --
have been using 3.2.5 since November, I don't
have a personal interest in whether you add it
or not.

I just pity all the unsophisticated Ubuntu users
of gramps out there, the ones who don't know
now to get a more modern version, who wait for
their Ubuntu package manager to automatically
tell them about it (or do it, or whatever). As
after all, it is the "unsophisticated user" who is
the target market Ubuntu is aimed at -- as I
understand it at least.

I see their bug reports on the gramps bug
tracker (the main one, the "upstream" one,
not whatever bug tracker Ubuntu has), with
their "3.2.3" version number. And when they
are told "that bug has been fixed in 3.2.5" they
usually respond something like "I never knew
there was a newer version" or "how do I get
it, it's not in the Ubuntu repository?"

If the Ubuntu bureaucracy is more interested
in blindly following rules and not very interested
in keeping their users supplied with packages
which have bugs fixed, then I guess that is
up to them and their decision.

I will note that my original question has not
been answered, however.

I would have thought that a bugfix release should automatically be packaged whenever possible.

According to http://gramps-project.org/2010/10/gramps-3-2-4-released/ "There were more than 120 bug fix commits against gramps32 since the release of 3.2.3."

and for 3.2.5 "Highlights of fixes in this release include:

fix Gramps so it again runs with Python 2.5
write all notes and sources to gedcom files
    cli fixes
    GeneWeb and LegacyGedcom fixes
    NarrativeWeb fixes
    memory leak fixes
    various other small fixes
    many translation updates

Whoah, I was trying to be helpful, not stir up a fight. FFes are process bugs for getting approval from the release team for last-minute changes. They are about weighing up the risk of bringing in a new version against the bugs it'll fix.

Ubuntu receives the latest releases (bug-fix or otherwise) via Debian for most packages. However they stop being automatically imported at the Debian Import Freeze. For natty, this was around new year. After that we concentrate on fixing bugs in the packages we have. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyReleaseSchedule

Even with this bit of bureaucracy, bringing in new versions is totally achievable, that's what this bug is about. Including information like the release notes Duncan linked to is useful to the release team in reviewing this request.

Please can we keep this bug on topic. If you have any questions related to the Ubuntu development process, please contact me personally or visit the #ubuntu-motu IRC channel on irc.freenode.org.
