RealTek ALC260 Sound Card on Dapper + Internal Microphone

Bug Description

Dapper has serious unresolved issues with the RealTek ALC260 chip shipped on the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook P7120 where the sound card would boot muted. This is fixable with configuring the alsa-mixer, however the master volume is always assigned to the headphone (instead of the internal speakers). And there are also issues with the internal microphone (working on the same chip) not being able to record anything. Instead an external mic has to be used thus making the internal mic useless.

I would like to enquire if these bugs are fixed with the release of Edgy EFT? or will it be another setback for me and encouragment for going back to Windows once again!

Thanks.

It would be nice if you mentioned whether you've tried Edgy Beta.

I just tested Edgy Beta, and the problems still persist.

two more bugs discovered:

-Intel PRO/Wireless 2915 doesn't work anymore, worked in Dapper!

-resolution had to be hacked in dapper from 1024x768 to 1280x768 using 915resolution, its still the case in Edgy.

Seems like this version has been rushed a little without working on many known bugs from dapper. I am staying with good old windoze for the time being on the desktop (at least everything works in that).

Getting everything on every laptop to work every time is a very difficult process, but Ubuntu has come a long way since it started. Let's go over what's not working still. Here's how I'm interpreting the problems you've mentioned:

1. Sound:
  a. sound card is muted on boot by default
  b. master volume changes headphone volume, not speaker volume
  c. internal microphone isn't working, but external does
2. Wireless:
completely non functioning: regressed from Dapper
3. Screen:
defaults to 1024x768, should be 1280x768 without using 915resolution

Is that correct?

There is a wiki entry on this model laptop at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/FujitsuLifebookP7120 The tester there did not seem to have any problems with the wireless or the sound. Maybe you could try contacting him to see if he could explain how he got these working.

And also, is all of this not functioning under a LiveCD or an installed version? Try booting from the Edgy Beta disc and see if the problems persist.

Thanks for helping make Ubuntu better.

I tested it both on an installed system as well as a live-cd, still no joy with sound + mic however I managed to fix the screen resolution with 915resolution, and wireless with ipw2200 driver in Edgy.

Working in a multimedia field I do require my audio/mic to be working perfectly, otherwise the whole concept of moving to Linux is useless for me, which I really don't want to happen. Now I will look into other distro's that has the above problems addressed. I hope to return to Ubuntu in the future.

Hi,

I'm the author of the Wiki entry on the Lifebook P7120. I can second the observations above.

1a. Internal speakers are muted at first boot. However, after activating them they stay active even after rebooting.

1b. The master volume changes only headphone volume, not internal speakers. This is true for me as well. I had to set the volume applet to control the internal speakers only. The Fn keys are still connected to the master volume, I don't know how to change that (and that's not a fix of the real problem anyway).

1c. External microphone works after turning on capture in Volume Control and setting the jack mode to Mic. Internal microphone just gives static noise.

I think I have read about these issues with other distros as well. If you find a distro that works, could you please tell us since that might help us find a solution?

Oh, I should have mentioned that I've only tried Dapper, not Edgy beta yet.

Now that Edgy has been released, could you please test and see if this is still a problem, if possible? Thanks.

I have Ubuntu Edgy, Xubuntu Edgy and Windows XP running currently (triple boot), and again:

- the sound card is detected in Ubuntu Edgy but the volume is muted by default. It can easily be unmuted, however I still haven't figured out how to assign the hotkeys (i.e. FN+F8/F9).

- the internal mic is not working, only external works after enabling the the Capture options in the sound settings.

- the screen by default looks ugly and can be fixed with 915resolution (however the Universal Repos has to be enabled - it took me time to figure that out!).

THE GOOD NEWS is that Xubuntu detects and enables the sound automatically, however the other issues are the same as Ubuntu.

The other interesting thing is that Xubuntu optimizes the sound; when I put the internal speakers on FULL VOLUME in Ubuntu I can hear alot of Noise (interference) however that issue is fixed in Xubuntu.

Seems like we are on the right track

a strange thing I did was that I got bored with gnome and completely removed it using this help file:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purekde

I installed kde-core and wasn't happy with that due to its limited features, so I installed kubuntu-desktop on top of the kde-core installation...and guess what happend?

.....the hotkeys started to work for volume and I am quite pleased with that. so I can control the volume with the fn+f8/f9 keys now

and I love kubuntu-desktop, so neat and beautiful, I have also felt it to be faster than gnome (see image attached)

Volume and mute hotkeys work fine by default under Feisty. No luck with the internal mic though.
