I just installed Unity in Maverick desktop (64bit) and get the same problem. I can still see the cursor and when I press the print screen button the Screenshot Dialog box appears but everything else is blindingly white

maverick@conroe:~$ apt-cache policy mutter
mutter:
  Installed: 2.31.5-0ubuntu1~10.10~ricotz2.2
  Candidate: 2.31.5-0ubuntu1~10.10~ricotz2.2
  Version table:
 *** 2.31.5-0ubuntu1~10.10~ricotz2.2 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.31.2-3ubuntu3 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main Packages

I am using the nvidia-current drivers (256.35) on an 8800GTS. I didn't use the PPA because the only maverick packages seem to be a slightly older version of mutter.

bob hazard, you are facing bug 579683. disable the gnome-shell ppa from software sources and install mutter from Ubuntu repositories..

$ sudo apt-get install mutter/maverick mutter-common/maverick libmutter-private0/maverick

Thanks I was just about to report back. Yes mutter was stuck on the gnome-shell version despite ppa-purge

As well as the 3 mutter packages I had to also downgrade

libgirepository1.0-0
gir1.0-freedesktop

Which were stuck on the gnome-shell versions. Unity is working now

I do not think this is a duplicate of 579683.

If you will notice the entry under "uname" gives

Uname: Linux 2.6.35-9-generic i686

I do not think that this can be right. I installed this on a 64 bit box but I have installed other x86 versions with no trouble and run the right kernels. This happened after an update/upgrade that included a kernel.

I am sorry that I can not give you the Mutter info requested or anymore info for that matter as I have wiped the partitions it was installed on.

It will be a fresh install as soon as we get an A3 RC ISO for testing.

I am having the same issue. After running an update using the update manager now I only see a blank white screen after booting.

I am running mutter version:
2.31.5-0ubuntu6

And kernel:
2.6.35-21-generic i686

@Gabriel Loewen : You might be facing the problem due to latest mesa update : bugs 599741 and bug 616997 have similar issues.

Could you open a new bug using :
ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-<driver>

where <driver> would correspond to the graphics card your system has.

And then add a unity task. Or mention the bug# here..

on hp mini 210 netbook

i fixed by adding:

CLUTTER_VBLANK=none mutter --replace --mutter-plugins=libunity-mutter

in file .profile

for some reason that worked while:

CLUTTER_VBLANK=none mutter --replace

did not
