Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

On my Gateway LT31u (Radeon X1250, a.k.a. rs690m), unity crashes on startup. I installed amd64 Ubuntu Desktop Maverick Alpha 2 and then the "ubuntu-netbook" package. Everything is dist-upgraded.

When I try to log in, the top-left quarter of the screen gets a white box which disappears soon after; then the background, top panel and left panel appear. (The clock and indicator applets are present.) After about half a second, the panels disappear and the whole thing repeats.

The crash occurs in the "mutter" process. I get different crashes depending on whether KMS is enabled. (I usually disable KMS because otherwise compiz's wobbly windows cause a crash and https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27529 causes me grief; but those are bugs for another day.)

Perhaps related to Bug #596292

I've tried putting "AccelMethod" "XAA" and "AccelDFS" "off" into my xorg.conf; they don't change anything. I've also tried "DRI" "off", but that just prevents mutter from running entirely.

Attached: three full backtraces, lspci info.

For me when I try to start Unity with the boot CD of ubuntu netbook edition 10.10, the screen blink and I can't do anything. I also try to use it with a Virtual Box and My pc freeze and can't do anything except boot.

This is probably fixed in Maverick by the recently added mesa 7.9~git20100909-0ubuntu1 package. Could both of you please update and test, then let us know the results?

Still doesn't work. The white covers the entire screen now and I never see the panel--the white just flicks away and comes back again.

I also get a crash if I run unity with --popup; I assume it's the same one, so I've attached a backtrace.

Here the attachments. I did not install unity but try with the Beta CD . So I'm gonna wait the next beta to test the fix.

Thanks to both of you.

Didier - There won't be a second Maverick beta. The next milestone is the Release Candidate on September 30th 2010 - see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickReleaseSchedule
It would be nice if you could test with the new Mesa version (mentioned in comment #8) before then.

Did you update the mesa packages after updating to Maverick beta?

Yes I checked that I had the correct mesa package installed before making my test .

unity now tells if you can't run it at startup and will logout you nicely.

There is also a new mesa waiting for approval to get wider hardware support.

Well I don't know if your mesa has been approved, but here when I test unity. I does not blink anymore, but I don't see the icons and panel. I can click on the transparent panel and start the software. It also have square tool tip that pop on mouse hover the left panel.

Now with the natty daily build I see the Dock, but the text is a little unclear. You have work to do to get the text clear and etc. But you are definitively on the right track. Hope to see improovement over time. The daily build are really a good thing to keep testing new stuff.
