default folder/file handler is improperly set from 'open with other application' menu

right, so the problem is that the "open with other application" is still there for folders which is shouldn't, looks like a known upstream bug though.

the upstream bug is https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=580309 (read the comments there) and it's being tracked on bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/366963 since there's no need to have two open bugs tracking the same bug i'm marking this as a duplicate of bug 366963

I disagree that this is a duplicate of those bugs which are about no r. click -> PROPERTIES -> open with dialog

What's happening here is the default folder handler is being changed from nautilus to whatever app is chosen from the r click -> open with other application menu.
(which is and should remain a valid option.

Again a quick test.
right click on any folder -> open with other application, choose something. Then when trying to open any dir. in Places the app previously chosen will open instead of nautilus.

A 'safe' choice to test would be to choose firefox from the 'open with other application menu', it won't get hung up parsing Home Folder or /

This does not affect opening a Desktop dir., nor will any app currently in the r. click open with (if any)

Took me awhile to notice that...
If true, that there should be No Option to open a dir. with anything other than the file manager, well that's just ridiculous.

If you can't fix the true issue here then you should return the user's ability to set a default folder handler which is the jist of the other bugs though the intent was different - ( people just wanted to remove items from the 'open with' list.,

Or you all can continue to ignore this though each day more and more people are wondering why such and such is opening from their places menu

Also worth noting that in 9.10 and 10.04 you can use 'open with other application' and not change the default from nautilus

final comment from me on this matter -
anywhere I wrote 'open wtih' was meant to be just 'open', there is no 'open with' on the context menu for dir.'s

The culprit here is the 'Remember this application for "folder"' file' checkbox.

By default it is checked, that 's what's causing apps to be set as the default folder handler.
Unchecking it doesn't prevent the app from being added to the 'Open With' menu

It would seem the option should be removed or at the very least the option (check box) not enabled by default

For the last time this is not a dupe of that bug. Post 9 gives the cause of this behavior

There really isn't much to look at - make the "Rember...." inactive by default (or remove altogether - is not needed for folders or files

I had the same problem today, I opened a directory with vlc through the "Open with other Application" and I forgot to uncheck the "Remember this application for 'folder' files" option.. well it took me a while to understand why everytime I tried to open a directory in the Places menu it just opened vlc..
+1 to not enabling that option by default. Or at least, for folders it should give the option ""Remember this application for THIS folder".

As a beginner, I spent quite a lot of time to figure out why I could not browse my directories anymore. (After adding a nautilus-script to open folders with rhythmbox, it was set as the default application to launch directories).
I found the mimeapps.list using grep, In my opinion, it is not very user friendly for a newbie who wants to do the same as he used to do with his/her MS file manager (right-click, open with)

This happen to me too, I opened a map in vlc, in my music folder, and then every folder opened in vlc(!) to me, this is not exactly a bug, but it's wrong, and have to be fixed somehow.

This should be set to "won't fix" (I can't do that..), - because it's an upstream bug and is never going to be fixed anyway. (upstream

With a functioning nautilus-folder-handler.desktop included in Precise's nautilus, this is fixed. If you still have the symptoms, you probably have old files in ~/.local/share/applications/ . Try cleaning that out, and remaking the associations you need. I had to. :)
