Interesting!
The option "Copy Image" actually copies the image to the clipboard, and can be used in image editors [like GIMP, inkscape]

Not a papercut, if the request is to fix the Paste image from clipboard as file to Nautilus.

But the option does mislead the user to think it is similar to "Copy" option in Nautilus. Maybe rename option to "Copy Image to Clipboard" would be clearer and avoid confusion?

FWIW , it is the same "Copy Image" in Chromium too.

This is an example of the harm caused by file managers using "Cut", "Copy", and "Paste" to refer to moving and duplicating files, while every other program uses them for moving and copying things *inside* a file.

One way to fix this would be to have "File" > "Move To…", with some sort of bottom-of-screen overlay for cancelling or confirming the move into whichever folder you navigate to. And similarly "File" > "Copy To…" for copying. Then the Edit menu items could be strictly about text (e.g. in filenames) and icons, not about files as a whole.

Matthew, I suspected something like this, but hoped there may be some clever fix someone could write so that Nautilus would accept raw data as well as files.

I just found out that dragging and dropping images works just fine - surely, then, it is possible to make copy and paste work.

It has been noted in comment #1 that the same behaviour is observed in Chromium. This implies that the problem is with Nautilus, rather than Firefox.

Also, since modifying Nautilus to fix this would be nontrivial, this is not a paper cut.

I'm not convinced about this being a bug per se. I think users generally expect and understand that copy and paste is for moving content, the action of creating a file seems more than just moving content to me.
