Bug Description

After upgrading to 10.04 my computer freezes with blinking lines on screen when the screensaver comes on. When I go into screensaver to try and turn it off, the same thing happens, computer freezes but screen goes blank.

so I can't leave the computer alone and I can't change this setting.

Many thanks, love Ubuntu!!! Wish I knew how to fix it myself :)

Regards,
Max

Most likely this is a graphic driver issue.

Have a look at the following wiki article on X troubleshooting screensaver issues.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#Problem:%20%20Freezes%20occur%20when%20idle%20and%20screensaver%20is%20set%20to%20random%20settings%20or%20OpenGL

Thanks, looked at the article, but don't have the technical ability to analyze the bug through bisection. When I check drivers it says no proprietary drivers.

I notice that there are a number of other screensaver bugs listed.

thanks again, but still require solution.

I don't think this affects the update manager, rather it is something that happens after update. I was able to run update manager ok today. It is solely related to the Screensaver function. If I wait the preset 5 minutes then my screen freezes & I cannot access the computer without a reboot. If I try to open the screensaver module then the screen freezes and I cannot access the computer without a reboot.

Thanks for any help, this is a system stopping error.

I put 'eyes' on the panel to do something while I was keeping the system going during a download, when I was rolling them I got the screen/system crash just like the screensaver.

This may be a driver problem, I do not have the technical skills to get inside the system. I am not getting crash reports. But it is a major problem, as my computer worked great before upgrade and now it is useless except for a few minutes till the screensaver comes on.

thanks!

Also, the screen resolution was changed after upgrade, if that info helps.

If you can, please attach the following files to help troubleshoot this problem:

The additional information you have shared above seems to suggest a specific bug with the video driver you are using. This information requested above will better inform the developers about where the problem lies so perhaps it can be worked around or fixed.

It appears you have run into an intermittent freezing bug with the intel graphics driver.

There is a wiki page with possible solutions you may want to try.
Probably the simplest is to boot from an older kernel and see if the problem recurs.

OK, tried Workaround A, same problem but get blank screen instead of flashing lines. Tried an earlier kernel and that gives me same problem but screen freezes as is. So it appears that I am on the problem, but don't have the technical ability to solve it. Tried Workaround C but couldn't get the ppa to install.

Would it be best to do a disk format and clean install back to 9.x? I'll lose some customization but get my computer back working again.

Thanks again for your help.

Do you have desktop effects switched on? Have a look at system / prefs / appearance at the visual effects tab and change to "none" and see if the problem continues.

Unfortunately, there are some rather serious problems with the intel drivers in the kernel for 845G chipsets. There is some more information as how this may be worked around in the link from the release notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Intel%208xx%20X%20freezes/crashes .

I'm marking this as a duplicate of bug 541492 which tracks the freeze problems due to the cache incoherency on 845G chipsets.
