Bug Description

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

From time to time (I cannot find a pattern) the applet with the session menu becomes invisible and seems to be replaced by a second copy of the "me menu" applet. When this happens I cannot log out so have to either call the restart/shutdown menu with the power button or kill x using ctrl-alt-backspace. The second me-menu to the right of the real one is not responsive to left or right-click.

This happens about twice per week through various versions of lucid beta with latest updates, but I am not able to reproduce or trigger the bug. The only way I can describe the exact symptom is with the attached screenshot.

I have the same bug on my Lucid install on i386 arch Dell Inspiron 640m. I found that if you first select the 'me menu' and then move the cursor just to the right of it you will select the session menu. At least this way you can log out/shutdown.

on the other bug report the reporter suggests that disabling compiz solves the problem. Can any one please try to disable compiz and check if the problem is still there

Yes, this is a compiz issue. It occurs once logged in so to reproduce simply login with compiz enabled. It is intermittent, however. Disabling compiz resolves the issue but only after a logoff/reboot, its not an immediate fix.

Bug #571267 has more details on my specific experience with this issue.

This is an intermittent issue. I booted to the desktop (autologin) and had the obscured panel (attached above). I logged out and back in, and now it is fine. I don't know how to determine whether or not it is a compiz issue. I could disable compiz for a week, and if it doesn't reappear - that might be an indicator. But hardly proof.

I performed seven reboots just now, and only the last reboot took me to a desktop with the obscured panel. It had been my perception that 50% of the boots gave me this problem.

How can I disable compiz completely for the next few days?

You go to Sytem->Preferences->Appearance and then select 'Visual Effects' tab, and there select 'None'.

It happens on my laptop too. And I didn't do anything odd before it showed like that.
I fix it erasing the elements and adding them again one by one...

Disabling Compiz has resolved this for me. Several reboots and no sign of the problem.

Has this bug been upstreamed to Compiz team or Gnome team?

I'm confused about it being marked as "invalid" without any sign of plan to fix this issue.

This issue is still present, I agree it should not be marked invalid. I experience this issue almost daily on Lucid, and this isn't even beta. If this issue was reported while still in beta, it should have been resolved by final release.

Anyone working on this? It first happened to me after restarting after installing some updates. No clue what they were. I found a fix on the net then and thought i had permanently fixed it. I have seen it 3 or 4 times since then. And now. If there are multiple users it is a pain.

This post provides a temporary fix to the problem without restarting. One poster said that increasing the height of the panel fixed it for him. I have done that will see if it happens again.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
