Binary package hint: pcmcia-cs

Pcmcia-cs is for older 2.6 kernel. Now it's obsolete, but virtual package ubuntu-desktop requires this. (On dapper)

Could you please cite where pcmcia-cs is obsolete? A quick google isn't turning anything up.

1. link:
The Linux pcmcia-cs package is officially deprecated. It can only be used with 2.4 and older kernels. Current information on PCMCIA support for recent 2.6 kernels is available here.

have you ever used google? :)

Sorry. I searched for "pcmcia-cs obsolete" which in fact doesn't turn up anything useful.

np, so i think that pcmcia-cs package must be set deprecated/obsolete.

Assuming that bluez-pcmcia-support works with pcmciautils ( I don't think it should matter?), I agree.

Ok, this is fixed in Edgy, where we have synced the changed bluez-pcmcia-support package from Debian. I'm closing this bug up.

If you want to file a backports request, say so. But I don't think it is going to happen since you are talking about changing a package in main. I don't much see the advantage to going back and changing it to use pcmciautils since it apparently works on Dapper. It is deprecated, yes, but the next release fixes that.

but: it must be installed (ubuntu-desktop dep.) and if you run init script pcmcia-cs it do nothing, just say error message. now it using pcmciautils by default, it couldn't work with pcmcia-cs. init just run script at computer startup and say error message, then another init script run pcmciautils, thats all.

But is there any loss of functionality or any real problem with it? Deprecated means it shouldn't be used in anything new, but it remains usable. Make an argument for replacing a working system in an already released operating system. Especially one that is part of every single Ubuntu install. Since you seem insistent, I'll add Ubuntu-backporters to the bug and let them decide.

Backports cannot really "fix" this bug (in terms of removing deprecated pcmcia-cs from systems)... Backporting a ubuntu-desktop package that does not have this dependency will not do much at all... dist-upgrade won't remove pcmcia-cs, and adding Conflicts is too much in my opinion, as I'm not sure what upgrade scenarios it might break.

As far as the init script, it takes 0.3 seconds to execute on my Dapper machine, roughly 0.8% of boot time. So, it's not really worth removing invasively at all.
