sound working on headphones jack but not on speakers on an hp MINI 210 running ubuntu 9.04

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information. Would you please add the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate attachments?
If you are running Jaunty or Karmic this can be done automatically if you run "apport-collect -p alsa-base 515757" (without the quotes) from the terminal.

I noticed that you are not using the standard jaunty package of alsa-base. As such you will not be able to successfully use the "apport-collect" command. Please see the "Automatic Sound Information Collection" (specifically the section pertaining to "alsa-info.sh") section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as this will collect the information required to help debug your sound issue.

I think I performed the steps you required here, however I got the following
message in my terminal window:

You have to allow "Change anything" privileges.

However, I did allow the "Change anything" privileges, so I'm not sure what
to do next. So, if this is enough, let me know. If not, let me know what
other steps to take. I am running Jaunty (9.04), so I think these steps
should have worked.
Anyhow, let me know if you need any more help from me.

I need you to run the "alsa-info.sh" script mentioned in the link from my previous comment. This allows me to see details relating to your sound card, channel volumes, etc, etc. Please do the following (from the link provided in my previous comment):

Automatic Sound Information Collection

In the event that you are not running Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) you can less automatically gather sound information using the following script from the alsa project site: alsa-info.sh. By default, the script uploads the information to alsa-project.org . This information can be used by ALSA developers to improve current support for some cards. If you do not wish your information to be uploaded, please use the --no-upload argument when running the script. The script was written to aid the alsa developers, and also to help the people in #alsa to sort out sound issues. Please download the file to your home directory and run the script as follows:

    $ sh ./alsa-info.sh

or if you put it in your ~/bin and ~/bin is in your path and you make the file executable (chmod +x ~/bin/alsa-info.sh)

    *$ alsa-info.sh

    * The script will generate a URL. Please add this URL to your bug report.
    * If for some reason the script does not generate a URL, please use the --pastebin option (our original upload method)
    * The alsa-info.sh script can either be run as 'bash alsa-info.sh' _or_ made executable and run as './alsa-info.sh'.

I know you are running jaunty, but apport does not like the PPA version of alsa you are running.

for some reason, this time around, i could not run either of these bash alsa-info commands, mentioned above as well as in the link in comment #3. I believe I did run this url generator for ALSA info before I ran maurizio's fix from bug#318942... and I still have the output url:

                    As you have changed a lot of settings &/or updated alsa since you first ran that script, it will not be of much use. Can you please run it again & post the link so that it contains your current audio settings.

I know I'm a complete newbie at this, and I realize that this may be a
really basic problem, but every time I try to type the commands to get ALSA
info:

 $ sh ./alsa-info.sh

   *$ alsa-info.sh
----------------------
I get the following error:
bash: $: command not found

anyhow, this command obviously worked for me before i made maurizio's fix,
because I was able to retrieve the ALSA information url. However, it doesn't
seem to work now. Again, I apologize for being such a newbie at this.

Hi soypirate. Sorry for the delay in my reply. When opening a terminal window, it defaults to opening your home directory. Is the alsa-info.sh script in your home directory? If it is not, please save this file to your home directory & try to run the script again.
