Transparency slider slow on Ubuntu

Bug Description

I've used Inkscape 0.46 and 0.47(pre3 mostly) on Windows Vista and Windows 7 during the past few months (at work). I love the program!

Since I'm using Ubuntu at home, and I know Inkscape is a platform-independent program, I installed it there too.

But after a while, I noticed that the responsiveness of the Transparency slider (under Ctrl+Sh+F-dialog) is _very_slow_. It is so slow it becomes a hindrence of working with Inkscape under Ubuntu. After all, transparency is a very useful technique to draw shades and speculars.

As a semi-workaround to this, I've started typing in for example 50 and pressing Tab for the update to apply - instead of using the more natural mouse drag to pull down the transparency slider.

Also, sometimes the Sh+F6 tool feels bogged down to a crawl.

And I've turned down all filtering under preferences to the lowest possible - it does not help with the transparency slider, but of course speeds up the general zooming/panning responsiveness.

Does anybody have any hint/experience about this performance problem which seem related to linux systems?

Thanks for a great program!

Thanks JazzyNico.

I'd like to help out any way I can - for example, I probably can give you more detailed system/os description, but I don't know how to do that. Is there a command to produce a system configuration report? Also, installed libraries etc. I guess is of interest in reproducing.

Don't worry, your report is very clear.
Debugging that kind of issue (with no crash) seems a bit difficult to me. Maybe a gdb expert could give some tips?
It could help if you find out what specific action (if any) triggers this bug. Or if someone else can reproduce it.

Reproduce (on my system):

1. F4 - draw a rectangle
2. F1 - select it
3. Ctrl+Shift+F grab and drag Transparency slider (I think it may be called Opacity in 0.47?) for object (not alpha value for stroke/fill color)
4. Notice the 2-5 second delay between each update of rectangle graphcis/slider position. It sometimes freezes Inkscape to "gray mode" (application not responding to events) on my Ubuntu computer.

This time I've tested with a blank new document, but I've never noticed it before, even with more complex drawings.

Do you use the default (on 9.04) 0.46 Inkscape version, or a compiled one?

Thanks for testing. I'm on a AMD64 system, 9.04, Inkscape 0.46 (don't know sub-version-number).

The complexity of the drawing does not affect the performance of the slider - or rather, it is quite slow with a blank+rectangle already. I have not been bald enough to try it with a complex drawing yet ;)

I use the default Inkscape that came with 9.04.

Could it be something with the graphics card? I have an NVidia card, and I have tried two different driver-versions (180 and 93 or something) but that did not make a difference.

Or is the slider/transparency performance not at all related to gfx driver/hardware?

@Olof, do you still use Inkscape 0.46 and Ubuntu 9.04? If not, could you confirm you still have this issue with a more recent OS/Inkscape version?

It could be a performance issue, but not necessarily due to the graphic card.

I'm not fluent enough to update neither the OS nor Inkscape on my Ubuntu computer (10.04 "hangs" while live booting it).

I am hoping this problem will disappear with my new computer which I'm picking up any day soon. I'm not using Inkscape on Ubuntu due to this problem and some stability issues, primarily with bitmap handling.
