Bug Description

I upgraded my venerable Sony Vaio PCG SRX51P/B from a working fine Jaunty to Karmic and it mostly works fine. The problem is that neither Bluetooth or WiFi work at all now. Wired Ethernet is fine. Overall, sadly, the machine has gone from "sort of useful" to "totally useless".

Daniel Hollocher on Answer 89967 (https://answers.launchpad.net/launchpad/+question/89976) suggests this is actually a kernel problem rather than an Ubuntu problem, which is clearly a very sensible suggestion. He proposes running the Jaunty kernel as a test. Rather stupidly I have managed to remove all the previous kernels just leaving 2.6.31-14-generic. Is there any way of getting 2.6.28-16 which I think was the last Jaunty kernel to test this hypothesis?

Has anyone got any ideas how to test this and/or if there is a fix pending anywhere?

Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 482535

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

I have just done a fresh install of Lucid on this machine. Wifi is still problematic. I posted Bug 532829, but perhaps I should just have continued with this one. Anyway I will do apport-collect in a moment or two. Sorry for the delay!

I put a fresh install of Lucid on the machine and the wifi and bluetooth failed to work. So clearly modern Linux kernels are not managing the Sony add-in (Sony Programmable I/O Controller -- SPIC) of the past that dealt with wifi and bluetooth. I guess the code has been removed as it used to work.

Sadly the machine can only take a maximum of 384MB of main memory, whilst operating systems these days seem to require 1GB or more to operate. With Lucid the machine was more or less unusable due to swapping -- especially apparent when using Unison, so I have had to retire it. This is a great shame as its sound card is far superior to anything that gets put into modern laptops, but that is a rant for a different forum.
