Bug Description

Sorry, me again. This bug has been reported under different setups, but I think my situation is a little different. My computer setup hasn't changed, i.e.,

Intel MacMini running OS X 10.6.1 with InkScape 0.47pre4, X11 XQuartz 2.3.4 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple45)

When I first run InkScape, everything is fine and I can copy and paste within documents and between documents. Then all of a sudden -- I'm sorry, I can't put my finger on a possible cause at the moment -- copy and paste stops working completely. If I quit and restart InkScape, still the same. I have to restart the computer before copy and paste will start working again, if only for a short while.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Darryl

1) does it help to quit and restart X11/Xquartz instead of rebooting?

2) Can you compare your X11/XQuartz preferences for the syncing of the X11 clipboard with the OS X pasteboard to the settings described the FAQ <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Copying_and_pasting_in_Inkscape_creates_pixellated_images_instead_of_copying_the_vector_objects> or to this X11 Preferences dialog screenshot: <http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3627#p17000> and test if it works for you with those settings?

This could be
a) a duplicate of bug #307005 “copy command always does bitmap copy” <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/307005> - the earliest report of clipboard issues with newer X11/Xquartz versions, or
b) related to the recent report detailing new X11 clipboard glitches on Snow Leopard: bug #460197 “Can't copy objects in pre4, Snow Leopard” <https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/460197>
c) some other third party application that interferes with the internal X11 clipboard?

Currently the earlier reports are conceived as X11/Xquartz issues that can be worked around by disabling some of the enhanced clipboard syncing features of X11. The X11-Users mailing list <http://lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/x11-users> could be a helpful resource for X11/Xquartz related problems as well as the Xquartz homepage <http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki> and its bug tracker. OTOH the integration of the system clipboard is a new feature of Inkscape 0.47(pre) <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.47#Desktop_integration_improvements> that could well be part of the problem (I'm not a developer, just trying to help with bug triage). However there are no similar reports from other unix or linux platforms where Inkscape uses the X11 clipboard without failures (except when third party applications like clipboard managers or download helpers interfere and sometimes trigger internal bugs in Inkscape).

Thank you once again! After following your advice and the FAQ all seems to be working again. So, yet again, I have reported a non-InkScape problem (;_;)

Cheers,
Darryl

Thnak you for reporting back and confirming that changing the X11 preferences solved the copy&paste issue.
