Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

When the monthly disk-check with fsck is done, Usplash displays a nice three-lines information message telling you what is being scanned and how to abort it. However, on an up-to-date Karmic system this information is cleared and written to the screen over and over again, apparently at the same intervals previously the now removed progress values were updated.

Each time the lines are removed from the screen and reappear one by one again. This could give the impression that Ubuntu is in an eternal loop.

I am getting the same issue. I did a clean install, but added an old ext3 drive to my fstab. I had to restart due to getting a kernel problem reported by apport. Upon restart, the old ext3 drive wanted to be checked. After about 5-6 minutes of the flashing, constantly reporting 0% progress, I hit escape and the system loaded fine.

It looks even worse when you are not using splash screen and quiet mode (no "quiet splash" kernel boot option). I set my filesystems to be checked every day, so I'm observing this behavior really often.

karmic should have a progress bar for fsck after boot time as jaunty had. This is a regression.

Confirmed. When aborting the process with ESC I get:

General error mounting filesystems.
A maintenance shell will now be started.

Same here, I hit escape and got "general error mounting filesystems"

I had to let the disk check run its course, then I was able to boot normally.

I am using an encrypted home folder, too (in karmic), don't know if that is a commonality here too.

I'm getting this, but after reaching about 5% my monitor displays "signal out of range". If I hit ESC it usually goes on to load OK. I have an onboard ATI Radeon 200 Express. My home is on a separate partition, but not encrypted.

I get this too, with Xubuntu 9.10. A few flashes and then it gives up and continues to boot, so I guess the filesystem is not being checked!
