Could not install ubuntuone-client under kubuntu

Bug Description

Hi, I tried to install ubuntuone-client on kubuntu 9.04. The setup of the PPA could be done via:

> sudo gdebi ubuntuone-jaunty-ppa.deb

But then, the installation of ubuntuone-client didn't work. Repeatedly clicking the "install" button on firefox did not produce any result. So I tried Synaptic, and then

> sudo apt-get install ubuntuone-client

but neither program could find the package ubuntuone-client.

I'll appreciate your advice!

I had the same observation.

The new packet source was visible in synaptic, but nothing for ubuntuone.
I solved this be rereading the packet-info Ctrl-R (Menü Bearbeiten/Paketinformationen neu laden) in my german kubuntu 9.04.
After that, I was able to install the client. It didn't much, but that's an other story...

Michael

Thank you Michael for the help! I'm marking this "Invalid" as these are the steps you have to take to install on Kubuntu. I will document these in a new answer for Kubuntu users interested in using Ubuntu One.

Changed in ubuntuone-client:
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Invalid

I was going to open a bug about this and then found this one. This is a documentation bug, and should be easy to fix (a couple of lines on the installation page) What's more that page is the main entry point for people installing and using ubuntuone for the first time, so it's a bit of a fall at the first hurdle.

Hmmm, how did you do that exactly ?

I have installed this ppa package but i haven't got anything like 'ubuntuone' in synaptic. I tried CTRL-R and nothing have changed.

Sounds bad. As far as I can overview it, it seems that adding the
package source does not work since synaptic did not rescan and made the
new packages available for installation.
At least for me a reload of the package infos helped.
I'm using a localized kubuntu (german system) perhaps the mapping is
different in your system?
In an englisch system, you can force the reload via Edit/Reload package
information.

If this does not help, I'm afraid I can't help you since I do not really
understand how synaptic works.

Michael

Thanks for reply.

Still nothing changed. I tried synaptic, kpackagekit, aptitude and pure apt and still it can't see any ubuntuone package.

But hey, i have checked repository list and there is no new one.
I expect there should be some ?

Szymon,

you should have:
    http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntuone/beta/ubuntu

in your list.

in my repository, but still no ubuntuone in quick search.

In the instructions given at:
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client/+faq/594
I am unclear about these two steps:
4) Run: $ sudo gdebi ubuntuone-jaunty-ppa.deb
6) Install the PPA

Does this mean that "Install the PPA" is accomplished by the "sudo gdebi ubuntuone-jaunty-ppa.deb", or is there something else that has to be done to do this. If so, how are you supposed to install the PPA?

In the post by Michael Schunk , I did not understand how to reread the packet-info Ctrl-R, unless this is simply the equivalent of the "Reload" button in Symantic. Although it goes by pretty quickly, when I Reload, I did not spot the
"http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntuone/beta/ubuntu" in the list. It is at the end of the "Third Party" section of my repository list, but I don't think it was at either the beginning or end of the list whizzing by as I reloaded with "Show Details", or something like that.

Thanks for your help.

You have to install the software via synaptic, as usual

I think this what was my inital problem too. After adding the ubuntuone
repository to the repository list, I still did not see the ubuntuone
packages in synaptic. For me reload finally worked.
If it does not work for you I think you have a different problem as I had.

Thanks for the comments, Michael. After reloading and rebooting several times, finally ubuntuone appeared in my repository. I installed ubuntuone-client, ubuntuone-ppa, python-ubuntu-one, python-ubuntu-one-client, ubuntuone-client-tools and python-ubuntuone-storageprotocols.

However, Ubuntu One does not appear either on the desktop, in the panel or in Applications > Inernet >
or anyplace else in the Kickoff Application Launcher. If I try "which ubuntuone" or "whereis ubuntuone", nothing is found. There is lots of stuff in various places that start with ubuntuone, but I don't know how to start it manually or from a terminal.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Try to switch to gnome. If I remember right, I did the initial setup
under gnome and then changed back to KDE.

In reply to Michael Schunk, I don't really have a lot of space on my notebook, so am reluctant to install gnome since I don't really like it as well as KDE (even though I will say that I think KDE 4 is a downgrade from KDE 3). Any other way to get it to work in Kubuntu without having to go that route?
