Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Alpha 1 upon my Medion MIM2120, and am failing to get KMS to work for me.

I have edited /etc/init.d/i915-kms.conf as instructed here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting and i am getting the wrong results.

When I first submitted this report I was running the 2.6.30-6-generic kernel, and I got these results:

Boot:
1. grub. ok
2. some text appears in low resolution. 800x600 or 1024x768 i think (excuse "some text", i am a linux newb... I can find out what it says if needed)
3. the usplash ubuntu logo appears in the same resolution as the text for a short moment
4. more text, same resolution. last line is "loading hardware drivers"
5. the screen is cleared, the resolution is set to 1280x800 (the correct resolution for my monitor) and the text continues.
6. i am presented with a login screen

Shutdown:
1. usplash ubuntu logo appears in correct resolution as expected
2. some text about devices being closed

I have now run a big load of updates (in particular 2.6.30-7-generic, see attachment 'synaptic update log' for full list) and i now get the following results (for both kernels!):

Boot:
1 + 2. as above
3. the usplash logo appears much larger than before, and is not central. the logo is so far off to one side that it wraps back onto the screen on the other side. This screen does not appear for long.
4. screen goes black for a few seconds
5. I am presented with a login screen.

Shutdown
1. just a black screen until power off.

when i add the kernel perameter i915.modeset=1, instead of using /etc/init.d/i915-kms.conf, the steps are almost the same as above. The only change is that the line "unknown boot option: 'i915.modeset=1': ignoring" appears during step 2, exactly as in the sixth second of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbC6NQtcnGc.

I did attempt to set the resolution for usplash in /etc/usplash.conf, and it did make a difference to the resolution, but it still wasn't right so i've commented it out.

The output of xrandr and lspci are attached.

also, i forgot to mention that once gdm has loaded, all animated cursors flicker... should i report this as a separate bug?

It look like your xorg.conf has a lot of garbage in it, which could be the issue. Could you attach it as well?

i've edited /etc/usplash.conf and added a couple of lines to try to set the resolution, but this didn't help.

I'm afraid I won't be able to provide any more information for this one. Karmic fell over, and it wasn't getting back up again, so i've reinstalled 9.04, and i think i'll revel in stability for a while now, sorry.

Since the hardware is no longer available for doing troubleshooting with, we'll have to close the bug for now. However please feel free to reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can reproduce this issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and is willing to do some troubleshooting with it.
