Bug Description

Hi

I am testing jaunty beta for 2 days now.
When I enable Kwin desktop effects the screen randomly freezes after some time, only the mouse can still be moved.
It looks like the screen is just not "refreshed" while system is still running, only way to shut down is by pressing "pwr off button", system then shuts down normally.

The problem mostly appears when new windows are beeing opened, ie when browsing for files etc.. .

Looks very similar to this bug here (just using kwin instead of compiz):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/332549

graphic card: ATI X1400 mobility M54

If there are any log files to post, let me know :-)

Hi

Google Earth, and GLXgears run smooth simultaneous for hours even when VLC is playing.
So maybe this is an Kwin specific bug and nit driver related?

In "my" Bug # 350933 I also described freezes with the same graphics card, this time not in connection with kwin (didn't test), but with 3d apps. Witch driver do you use? Considering my bug, I assume it's driver specific and not kwin specific, but I'm really not a pro in this topic.

Hi

The freeze issue is with Jaunty standard driver (dont know which it selects cause xorg.conf doesnt show a driver name) and with the "radeon" driver.

Currently I use the following settings:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Driver "radeon"
 Option "RenderAccel" "on"
 Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
 Option "AccelDFS"
 Option "DRI"
 Option "OpenGLOverlay" "on"
 Option "ColorTiling" "1"
 Option "DynamicClocks" "true"

EndSection

But using default settings doesnt help either.
Though I am not a linux pro either I am stuck without desktop effects for now.....sad ..sad :-(

Could you post your /val/log/Xorg.0.log (as an attachment, not inline)? I assume you use radeonhd. I vaguely remember having issues with the radeonhd driver. Try to use ati, perhaps this helps??

To use ati, enter "sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and change the line containing "radeon" to "ati". Take care that no fglrx package is installed at this time (it won't work then, at least it didn't 1-2 weeks ago). Reboot afterwards. If it does not help, I suggest to revert this change again so that you have a standard system again.

If X should not start any more, just undo any changes you did in the console and reboot again.

Hi

The problem occurs with the default settings of following drivers:

"radeon"
"radeonhd"

I am currntly using the following options:

Optio "RenderAccel" "on"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "AccelDFS"
Option "DRI"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "on"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "1"
Option "ColorTiling" "1"
Option "ColorTiling" "1"
Option "EXAVSync" "true"
Option "DynamicClocks" "on"

It improves performance but doesnt solve the "freeze" issue.

I have now switched to "ati" driver and will see if that helps.

Ok here we go:

Driver "radeonhd" is totally useless because:

1) crashes even faster than the other drivers, as soons as glxgears is running for 10-30secs
2) painfully slow (800fps)

interesting: driver crached plasma including crash report (never happened with other drivers)

Driver "radeon":

1) fast (1800fps)
2) glxgears + vlc + google earth runs totally fine when Desktopeffects are disabled

3) crashes with Kwin desktopeffects, screen freezes in this case with mouse pointer still moving

Driver "ati":

1) fast (1800fps)
2) glxgears + vlc + google earth runs totally fine when Desktopeffects are disabled

3) 3) crashes with Kwin desktopeffects: Screen freezes and backlicht goes off!? weird....

I did test "ati" and "radeon" driver with defaults (no options in xorg.conf) and with options "on" only one option at a time.
Options do improve performance a bit and reduce tearing effects a little but do not seem to affect the freeze issue.

Again: "ati" and "radeon" driver run fine when Kwin desktopeffects are turned off.

"ati" and "radeon" are the same thing. "ati" is a wrapper that loads in your case "radeon"

i'm having the same stability problems with kwin desktop effects enables and ATI M X1400 card.
When desktop effects are disabled everything runs fine.

Hi I am new to the forum but I have been chasing this issue for a long time. I don't think this defect is a duplicate of bug #371279 because bug #371279 got fix for me but not this one. I am experiencing Desktop freezes and mouse is still active most of the time.

Even using the version from git as described in the "Building recent version of radeon + mesa + drm" of http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon and I am still experiencing that issue.

If there are any kind of logs that could help, let me know.
