opens properly in firefox, but not in inkscpae, it actually loses the clipping on the gradient image

"clip-path" is one of the few element properties that is stored as an XML attribute in inkscape, not as CSS. In your file it's provided as CSS attribute, so inkscape unfortunately ignores it.

fixed with workaround in rev 21260. So far clipping will not be lost, but clip-path will not be editable either.
