Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. This was due to an internal archive accounting error. As a workaround, a new package is being prepared and will be uploaded soon.

Continue running under SSH?
This session appears to be running under ssh. It is not recommended to perform a upgrade over ssh currently because in case of failure it is harder to recover.

If you continue, a additional ssh daemon will be started at port '9004'.
Do you want to continue?
Continue [yN] y

Starting additional sshd
To make recovery in case of failure easier a additional sshd will be started on port '9004'. If anything goes wrong with the running ssh you can still connect to the additional one.

It's on an x86 machine that is running Gutsy and just a package upgrade (not a release upgrade.) The work around of manually installing it worked for me as well.

I am still having a problem with this update. Prehaps I am doing
something wrong or there is a work-around to get out of this loop.

I have found the 3 files:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 334576 2008-11-19 15:04 hpijs_2.7.7
+2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5.1_i386.deb

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 290354 2008-11-19 15:04
hplip_2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5.1_i386.deb

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6897850 2008-11-19 15:04
hplip-data_2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5.1_all.deb

in /var/cache/apt/archives/partial

Should I delete these files and start over again with Update Manager, or
is there some way for me to install them as they are?

Thanks,
Yogi Savetman

i was having the same problem, and like Yogi i found the files in /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/

after other reading on the web i browsed to the folder with konqueror (i am running kde). I then left clicked on each of the files and there was a package installer option that i used to install them. some of them had errors in the popup window that ran.

after doing that for all 4 files, i went back into the package manager and told it to do the upgrade again. this time it went all the way and i just rebooted with Gutsy a couple of minutes ago
