Bug Description

A new major upgrade for LyX has arrived as LyX 1.6.1, bringing major improvements to the user interface and new features. LyX 1.6.1-1 is currently in Jaunty. intrepid-release contains LyX 1.5.6-0ubuntu1 and hardy-backports currently contains LyX 1.5.5-1~hardy1.

LyX 1.6.1-1 also fixes Bug 271994 and Bug 309516, but is not eligible for stable release updates.

= Ubuntu changelog from 1.5.6-0ubuntu1 to 1.6.1-1 =

lyx (1.6.1-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Per Olofsson ]
  * Don't recommend postscript-viewer. Those who need one know how to get
    it, and a PDF reader is enough for most people.

  [ Sven Hoexter ]
  * New upstream release
    + Add missing includes for cstdio as it won't be included indirectly
      in gcc 4.4. Thanks to Martin Michlmayr. Closes: #505958
  * Add ${misc:Depends} to the Depends field for the lyx binary package.
    This seems to be a required thing nowdays (according to lintian).
  * Move texlive-latex-extra from Suggests to Recommends. Closes: #499629

lyx (1.6.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Sven Hoexter ]
  * New upstream release
    + Fix for 'word-delete' deletes following non-word items. Closes: #492841
    + URL export works again. Closes: #344677
    + Fix for tables stopped working in g-brief-de. Closes: #379747
  * Change the name of the license file on Debian system from GPL to GPL-2.
  * Refresh /patches/prefer-xdg-open.
  * Replace the old LyX logo with the new one. Converted from the
    lib/images/lyx.png file to 32x32 XPM file.
  * Remove empty /usr/share/lyx/images/commands directory from lyx-common.

  [ Per Olofsson ]
  * Remove texlive-latex-base dependency from lyx-common, as it already
    depends on tex-common via ${misc:Depends}, and that's all that's
    really necessary.
  * Remove debian/lyx-common.postrm. It was only deleting /etc/lyxrc,
    which is not necessary since the file is deleted in preinst.
  * Don't remove profiling.py, there's no reason.

I believe the reporter is submitting a backport request for 8.04 and 8.10 (original bug title "Version 1.6.0 released - backport for hardy and intrepid"). Therefore, this is not a duplicate of Bug 296786, which is a sync request for Jaunty.

This backport request needs to be assigned to hardy-backports and intrepid-backports, not the LyX package, as per guidelines: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#How%20to%20request%20new%20packages

Diff of dependency changes based on debian/control is attached. The diff is from LyX 1.5.6-0ubuntu1 in hardy-backports to LyX 1.6.0-1 in Jaunty.

At least the newly released LyX version 1.5.7 should be backported for Hardy and Intrepid.

Main feature of 1.5.7 is the ability to read documents created with version 1.6.0.

@Johannes Hessellund

LyX 1.5.7 was never packaged for Debian/Ubuntu and is not in any official Ubuntu repository. It is therefore not eligible for backporting.

I have used the Jaunty repository (jaunty-release universe) to upgrade to LyX 1.6.0-1 in Ubuntu 8.10. LyX runs without any issues.

I manually downloaded and installed lyx_1.6.0-1_all.deb and lyx-common_1.6.0-1_all.deb from Jaunty on an Intrepid system, and no other jaunty packages were required. I've been using it for 1 few days now, and it appears to be functioning correctly.

Therefore I believe that "backporting" lyx 1.6.0 to intrepid (at least) should be fairly easy to accomplish. It may even just be copying the jaunty packages.

FYI: lyx 1.6.1 has now been released, and the i386 version is already in debian unstable.

LyX 1.6.1-1 is now in Ubuntu Jaunty and is thus eligible for backporting. Note that only packages currently in Ubuntu's repositories are eligible for backporting. Packages from Debian repositories and other third-party sources are not eligible for backporting.

Reverting to new status as the backport request requires new test packages to be built (i.e. with Prevu or pbuilder). Please confirm only if a test build for 1.6.1-1 has succeeded.
