Bug Description

When users are not familiar with translation using gettext, they can "lose" translations without realizing it, when the translatable strings in the template change. They do show up in exports, but that is not very clear.

We could help these users by making translations of obsolete messages more visible where they might be relevant. For example, we could try to detect that a new message may be a replacement for an obsolete message, and show the latter's translations as suggestions.

This is bug 264122 distilled to its underlying problem.

Also note that people can still see obsolete translations they did by going to PO file pages filtered by the person who did them (eg. go to "Description" on the PO file page, and click on any of the "filter" links).

Eg. scroll down on the following page:

  https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/gst-plugins-base0.10/+pots/gst-plugins-base-0.10/sr/+filter?person=danilo&start=100

And you'll see "obsolete" messages prefixed with "~".

Changed in launchpad:
importance: Medium → Low
