problems with dvd play

Bug #272955 reported by matteo landricina

totem (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Totem plays only the dvd's menu, and only if I run the application from the menu first (no right-click on dvd icon). Dragonplayer plays without sound (I already checked the flashwave plugin for firefox, it's not that). Mplayer doesn't find the dvd at all. What's the matter? Maybe a bugfix issue?

Do you have libdvdread3 installed? If it's an encrypted DVD (most store-bought DVDs are), do you have libdvdcss2 from medibuntu.org installed?

Are you using totem-gstreamer or totem-xine?

Does it work if you use a xine-based player (totem-xine or xine-ui, for example)?

It's curious... as it seems I've got the totem xine installed somewhere, but it doesn't appear in the applications scroll-down menu... what is it? and how should I run it, by terminal?

You can just type "totem-xine" in the terminal.

yes, totem xine works. i hope this makes a sense to you...

Yep, makes perfect sense. The xine backend has traditionally had better DVD support (I use it for that reason). For that reason, I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate. I'm looking for the master bug.

Are there any news for my case? I still can't play video files (avi etc.) and dvds...

Run from terminal, totem gstreamer reports:

** (totem:7909): DEBUG: Init of Python module
** (totem:7909): DEBUG: Registering Python plugin instance: YouTube+TotemPythonPlugin

Totem xine isn't working much better...
