Bug Description

Binary package hint: avant-window-navigator

The awn dock can freeze in my installation. That means that I have an awn dock on my screen which can not be removed anymore (completely frozen) and any new dock that comes up sort of hovers over the old frozen one.
This does not happen very often but it did. It's not the same as bug 130235. Wonder if anybody can confirm.

My awn is 0.3.1.

FYI, if you're running a development version of Awn (e.g., 0.3.1) then it's probably best to file bugs at the Awn bug tracker <https://bugs.launchpad.net/awn/>, as the ubuntu Awn tracker is for the (stable) packages that are in the official Ubuntu repositories.

What are you doing when it freezes?

I haven't really found any pattern for this behaviour atm. But I wanted to know if other people experienced the same.

As the version, I just installed awn yesterday and I had 0.2.? first (from the reacocard repos), then updated to 0.3.1 (from awn-testing). Don't remember, but I think this problem occurred in both versions. As I said, I'm just using awn for less than a day and had this problem twice.

I'm pretty sure that reacocard's repository doesn't have 0.2.x builds. I'm guessing you had the packages from the official ubuntu repositories.

I've been using 0.3.1 for several months and haven't seen the freezing behavior that you're describing.

Could we get the Window Manager and Video drivers in use?

My window manager is metacity and as for the video driver, I have no clue: my computer is an FSC Amilo Si2636 with an Intel GMA X3100.

Just happened to me again, so I'm not dreaming. :)

This time, I just have a frozen bar on my desktop (without icons).

Hi Bernhard, thanks for using Ubuntu and thanks for your bug report! You mentioned you are using metacity; have you explicitly enabled compositing in it? If not, I don't think AWN will run properly and strange behavior is expected. Please run:

    gconftool-2 -g '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager'

from a terminal and provide the output. Thanks!

Additionally, could you check to see which applets are activated? You can do this by going to System -> Preferences -> Awn Manager, clicking on the "Applets" icon, and listing what's in the activated applets pane. If there are no applets in the activated applets pane, then activate the taskmanager/launcher applet.

OK, so output to

gconftool-2 -g '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager'

is "false".

I can also attach a screenshot of my awn dock (awn-dock.png) and the frozen bar (frozen-bar.png). Let me say again that this behaviour does not occur all the time, awn generally works pretty well. But once the frozen bar/dock is on my desktop, I cannot remove it unless with a restart.

And here the frozen-bar.png. It seems impossible to attach two files to one comment, is it?

Given that you can actually see the bar, I'm inclined to believe that you're running compiz, not metacity.

Actually the "frozen bar" is not as frozen as one might think: it extends with the "real bar", but it never retracts. Some more screenshots. Don't know if they help.

Sorry, I'm a newbie. I never explicitly switched on beryl or compiz, so I thought I'm running metacity. How do I check what is my window manager?

OK, guys. I just figured it out: my system monitor says that I'm running compiz.
Sorry for the wrong information above, I guess I missed that compiz is now standard in hardy.

OK, so I just realized that I have a "frozen bar" on my screen because there are some awn processes still lingering. The frozen bar disappears if I kill these processes. That's why I filed another bug #258675.

Setting this to invalid because the real reason for this behaviour is bug #258675.
