file-roller : suggest program to install upon unrecognized format

Bug Description

If I try to open an unsupported archive format (eg RAR) with file-roller, an
error just tells me that the RAR format in not supported. Thus, I might just
think it is a missing feature in the program, although the solution (install the
appropriate package) is pretty easy.

Should't file-roller just provide a little more information in these error
messages, maybe by suggesting which packages to install in order to be able to
open the desired format ? I don't know how relevant this is, since it is
basically distro-based (name of the packages... ?).

Or a simpler solution : since zip/unzip, rar/unrar (nad maybe others) are fairly
small packages, shouldn't file-roller just depend on them, so that you get a
complete, full-featured tool for any format, out of the box ?

We have quite a few bugs on different apps about this. rar is a "Suggests" of
the package by example but it's not obvious to user to use this field to figure
that.
Having a dialog asking if you want to install the corresponding package when
required would be really nice.

This use case was already noted for

Dapper.

D. Holbach gives a link which shows that some work is being done (or at least has been done at some point) in this direction. IMHO this would be really nice...

Vassilis Pandis (pandisv) wrote : Patch to display a more informative error string

I'm attatching a patch that changes the error message from "unrecognised format" to "Unrecognised format. To be able to open such files, you will need to install the unrar package from the multiverse repositories.".

It does not have a new dialog that will open up an installation. It's just a more informative string. I think that this could easily be in Dapper since it does not affect anythin else, and several people will benefit from knowing what package to install from what repository.

It's not a nice solution, it's cluttered but it's a fair temporary solution until the common install hooks are implemented.

I don't know what the prefer patch format is, so I diffed the files.

To patch:

cd file-roller-2.14.2
cd src
cat ~/file_roller.patch | patch fr-archive.c

I rushed the previous one and forgot to uncomment something. This patch is the right one.

Thanks for your work on that, could you use "diff -u" to make the patch, that makes them easier to read

In my opinion, the fix should be similar to when you want to play a mp3 the first time.
Simply, opening a dialog that asks you to install unrar (or unrar-free).

Sorry about the 'Nominated for Intrepid' thing :S

Lady darling
My thanks indeed for thy kind words, wise one and fair :-). At risk of serious smacks about the head, I'll still say I am but a scribbler, and it is those who offer their Voice and Spirit here who are the true virtue of this land (blush). Still, if my poor words bring a moment's smile or so (yes, or a tear (blushes again)), then I will hold those moments warm and close :-))))))).
And my thanks again, fair one, and those thanks times three times three :-))).

Subject: Thank you

My mom dropped off a cheeseburger today. I had hot chocolate yesterday. Turns out as hungry as my stomach was, my mouth wasn't. I'm also broke until Friday. I know I was supposed to paypal, but I got super broke, and I have to save a $5 just so I can get back and forth over the bridge. So many crap landlord stories, same as I've been told (I'll leave that for another day or never, I have vertigo I'm trying to calm).

I know what you mean. I rarely turn on the heat as much as I do for fear of The Electric Bill. But I saw my cats trying to wear each other, and I was purple so I thought I'd indulge.

I'm 30. My skin has never been very breakout prone, but I've always had issues with dryness, and associated overproduction of oil. Until I started building my routine here I had no idea how sensitive my skin is. Previously, I was using the Clinique three step routine and it was much too harsh for my skin. Since starting this new routine the dryness and associated oiliness have been dramatically reduced.

At this point, I think my main concerns is continuing to eliminate the dry/oily patches and getting my skin to a normal texture. I've already made progress but there's still a lot of room for improvement. Beyond that, I would love to continue preventing wrinkles. I'm very fair skinned so I've never spent much time without sunscreen but I also haven't been diligent about using it every day.

Ultimate goal, I guess, is to end up an old lady with skin like my great grandmother. She was 99 when she died and she consistently looked 20 years younger than her age because she avoided the sun and took very good care of her skin.
