Bug Description

Binary package hint: inkscape

Big translation files for lots of languages are distributed in inscape deb package instead of language-packs. For example there are lots (23 MB) of localized tutorial files in more than 10 different languages at /usr/share/inkscape/tutorials/ , also few megabytes of translated "about" dialog is at /usr/share/inkscape/screens/
Other packages from Ubuntu main, like Firefox, doesn't include translations in main package - translations of Firefox3 are in language-packs.
Another solution would be use separate localization packages, like openoffice.org-l10n-*

Inkscape package also has lots of architecture-independent files in binary package. There is Debian bugreport about splitting Inkscape package:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=482891 :

Could the icons, SVGs, examples, etc, be pushed out to a separate package that only gets updated when something in it actually changes?

A pre-release of the upcoming Inkscape 0.47 is now available in Ubuntu
Karmic for testing. Because *so* much stuff has changed compared with
the version you reported your bug against, would you mind re-testing
this new version and see if this bug is now resolved?

Karmic Alpha CD ISO images are available at:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If you're not testing Karmic yet, there are .debs of this new Inkscape
for Jaunty, Hardy, and Intrepid here:

  https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.testers/+archive/ppa

You might find further bugs when testing this alpha release. If that is
the case, please file a NEW bug report here:

   https://edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+filebug

Thanks ahead of time for your testing efforts, and enjoy the new Inkscape!

I can confirm that a large (21.9MB) tutorials folder still exists in karmic alpha 4, containing numerous translations

Right now in language-pack we only include .mo files.

Translations for documentation, help pages, tutorial , etc should be included in the binary package.

In this case we can create a new inkscape-tutorial binary package.

Inkscape core project doesn't provide debs or rpms.
Is there something we can do in order to help packagers?

This is not something for the language packs (that btw, have been in use till a couple of months ago for inkscape…).

I'll split the tutorials to a separate binary.

This bug was fixed in the package inkscape - 0.92.3-2

---------------
inkscape (0.92.3-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * d/control: Bump Standards-Version to 4.1.4, no changes needed.
  * Split the tutorials on their own inkscape-tutorials binary, and don't
install them by default. Closes: #471076; LP: #238276
