This could be done as an extension of the comment-hiding work that Deryck has already done in Launchpad Bugs; it's simply a case of making the UI available to the right people, which in this context isn't all that hard.

status: New → Triaged

Graham, if it's just a matter of making the UI available, could you please give some hints as to how to do that. Some opportunistic open source hacker might get around to it.

Since an API is already available, the solution we envisaged is using that API using the javascript client, triggered by some control next to the comment itself. Note that this will only be available to Launchpad administrators. We currently don't plan to make it possible for users to delete comments.

If anyone feels like hacking on this, please have a chat with myself or any other bugs team member and we'll be very happy to assist.

Note that bug #512489 (marked as a duplicate of this) suggests allowing users to delete their own comments as long as there is no followup from any other users.

I would agree; most forums I've used (in the Windows world) allow preview and edit/delete options. I for one need to cleanup a comment I made as it shows my email address as the user name - not a very good idea. Maybe someone could remove it for me. (I'm a *nix newbee)

Even though I've changed my user name in my account this logging system is still using my email address...... Please can someone amend my account or something!!!!!

Bugs and comments to bugs are prone to contain private data one might want to remove one day.

Registry administrators can remove comment now. This bug is now just about allowing users to remove comments from the UI.

I marked this as wont fix because allowing anyone to change just one source of the comment history will lead to a lot of confusion. bug 80895 expresses a feature that is doable without creating confusion. Registry Admins can hide bug and question comments if they are inappropriate or contain personal information.

Derek, things changed since this bug was marked Won't Fix, and you can hide your own comments. See http://blog.launchpad.net/general/you-can-hide-your-bug-and-question-comments for more up-to-date information.

this is violating user expectations. almost every big comment site on the internet allows editing and/or deletion of comments, some of them have a timeout of a few minutes to prevent issues with long-term deletion/edit. youtube, twitter, github, disqus, stack exchange / stack overflow, etc.

Don, as I say, you can hide your own comments. Comment editing is https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/80895, and we may well do that as part of adding support for better markup facilities in comments (since minor markup errors should be expected to be quite common and people will want to fix them).

I get that changing comments might lead to confusion, but what if the original comment in question is leading to confusion in the first place and deletion would resolve confusion?
