Bug Description

Hello.
I would like to use Inkscape a little bit as a
CAD-Program, because i didn't found really good
CAD-Software for linux. (i've tested qcad and was not
impressed with it).
All functions "I" need for designing are there, but
I would like to have dimensioning-tools in Inkscape.

regards,
Christian

yeah,
I would also LOVE to use inkscape for CAD functions.
the main thing that this would require would be to define
textually the exact lenth and angles of paths. this is
ofcourse doable via the XML, but it would be good to have a
small pop-up when adding or editing the paths.

cheers

When drawing simple objects, there is an indicator in the
status bar. Will this do what you want, if combined with
snapping to adjacent objects.

I suspect not.

I would have thought that the 'Get Info' inspector for an
object such as a line would allow one to type over the start
and end points, and similarly for other primitives, but it
seems not to.

This would appear to be a missing feature that should be in,
and you may want to check the wiki and release notes,
perhaps there is a reason why it is not in, and or add it to
the road map.

You might want to make a list of all features and usability
settings that would enable you to make better use of
Inkscape for CAD or technical drawing and see if you can get
them all in, preferable in most expeditious order.

I find this paper useful, I vaguely thought that there many
references to it from the Inkscape site, but in fact because
the Author refers to 'Star ship' rather than spacescraft or
spaceship and 'Corel Draw' rather than Coreldraw, it is
quite hard to find from Google. I think that you will find
useful as an introduction to using a general purpose drawing
program for technical design, and as a good, detailled,
basic introduction to this type of software in general.

I would be surprised if all the feature that you might need
could be incorporated in one step, but if you break down
your needs into some sort of priority order perhaps by, say,
release 51 you will have enough to create a Splash screen
for Inkscape featuring an alien Star ship

Hi, I'd like something similar to this: Since Inkscape is a
vector based program I would like to have the possibility to
draw items via directly entering the dimensions/positions.
Like starting point, length and angle for a line.
This would add the ability to draw in scale easily...

Anyway GREAT WORK :) I like your program very much. Keep it on!

I have this idea too. Present cad systems are too far from
design and use too complex and isolated file types. Also,
there is a big need of a cross-platform simple and nice CAD
prorgram. There are architects and designers, who hate usual
CAD's for uglyness (apart other reasons), and 3D modelling
for their "synthethic" aesthethics and also for complex
usability.

Not much missing to start from inkscape:
exact drawing/modifying,
measuring/dimensioning,
maybe command line.
All of it could also be a plugin or maybe a new branch of
Inkscape.

I'd guess also money lies there :)

I do miss the old Designer from Micrografx (v.3.1 and 7
are my favourites). For me that was always an usefull
program halfway between Graficdesign software such as
Coreldraw or Illustrator and real CAD programs. I had
hoped Inkscape might add some features that may fill the
space.

Import-Export filters for CAD formats would be usefull.
Exact placing, some tools for dimensioning and scaling
would be great not to forget some more functions for the
grid such as snap-to.

SVG has some neat functions that could be used as in-file-
libraries (like <use> or <symbol>) Imagine describing an
element only once in a def section and then refering to
that lots of times in the seeable drawing. This could save
lots of filesize for maps with symbols, cadfiles with
furniture or electrical layouts with symbols.

oh well just dreaming

Dimensioning would be helpful. Also would be nice to have
ability to create and edit blocks (a named sketch that is
stored off-screen and can be inserted into the drawing,
such as a title block)

Hey,

I totally agree with the thinks already said on this page.
The only thing I can say is that I miss this feature very
much. O, perhaps giving it a little bit higher prority would
also be nice (given the amount of respons on this page).

BTW Great program, go one!!!

Hello, I'm a fairly new user of Inkscape who would also like
to see
some simple cad abilities added. I have been a
carpenter my whole working life and recently designed and
built my own home. Using Corel Draw, the functions I used to
acheive a very decent set of house plans other than the
those already
included in Inkscape were the dimension tool, and set page
to scale.
These 2 features would make for a nice technical drawing
ability.

Thanks to all, Inkscape is really very impressive, Tim.

I would suggest that Inkscape also adapts features from the
excellent Corel Designer. This app is basically Corel Draw
with some CAD-like features. These features such as dynamic
guides (very nice!), enhanced snapping (end, mid, center,
tangent....), dimensions, fillet tool, perspective drawing
etc are needed in every type of technical design tool for
making patterns, drawings etc.

Lets help all poor designers get a perfect tool for
technical illustration. There not many user-friendly
alternatives on the market (i would say that Corel Designer
is pretty much the only one...).

Check out the Designer software:

fix this up people! I had a bit of a go collating the in for I could find
in the feature requests, and adding it to the wiki. perhaps it should be on
a separate page, I dunno.

Oh yeah! Inkscape with functions like "Hotdoors CADtools Illustrator
plugin".
That would make me and probably many more switch over...

The technical drawing abilities of the GSoC should help, but it seems that they are unfinished.

BTW, there's a good DXF importer comming along, cf. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/293940
