Image Cropping

Bug Description

Currently to crop an imported image, one loads it in
Gimp (or similar), does the cropping, and reloads into
Inkscape. It would save steps to be able to do this
entirely within Inkscape. The new improvements to the
image control can be used to approximate cropping,
but are a bit tricky to get working as expected.

Rather than adding a specific crop tool you might consider
adding a more generic slice tool (but I suppose that would
be just a differnt front end to the same backend).

If Inkscape doesn't already support line Guides I'm sure it
will soon, so being able to rasterize and slice an image
along its guides might be a a way to go.

What is the problem with tiling an image and editing its
shape? It fulfills all cropping needs and more, as it allows
non-rectangular cropping too. If something does not work as
expected file a bug. A way to physically crop a bitmap (as
opposed to masking out parts of it as a tile, or later via
an SVG mask) may be useful only for reducing file size and
only after we add image embedding. It's definitely not a
close perspective.

Alan: your comment is on image export, while what Bryce
speaks about is dealing with imported images.

I think this basically is a doublicate of RFE 864875.
Clipping provides a general interface for paths as well as
images. So with clipping being introduced, all the bitching
about the current idea with the patternfill (Bulia, should I
file some RFEs concerning this still?) becomes obsolete.
Talking about loading in GIMP... maybe there should be an
edit picture obtion that opens the default graphics editor
with the selected image.

Agreed, this is basically two RFEs: clipping and editing
bitmaps in an external bitmap editor. Both are duplicates.
