Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I booted with the Ubuntu 7.10 liveCD, and all seems well, except when compiz starts. I get lots of artifacts on top of the screen.

And the output of compiz --replace:
$ compiz --replace

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

This behavior is on the live CD. I haven't installed Gutsy yet, since I get this behavior. The computer I'm running this on has edgy working with the fglrx driver. However. I can make a small 5GiB or so partition to install gutsy on, for the purpose of this bug report.

Since this is the live CD, I assume the xorg.conf currently present is auto detected by xorg already?

Ok, Xorg doesn't create a config file itself, so I removed the current one and restarted X. Same behavior.

(BTW, I have installed all updates from the update-manager in case one of them would've fixed this, but no change)

Thanks. You can also get an updated ati driver on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge but I don't expect any change.

I've tried xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.7.195+git20071026-0ubuntu0tv a while ago. It didn't solve the problem. I am now running hardy which still has the same problem.

I don't know if this will fix this specific issue, but I've backported a bunch of high importance patches that upstream recommended, that fix problems sort of like this one, so I think it would be worth the time to test. It includes a fix for "color banding issues" which sounds vaguely similar to this problem. Anyway, please try this .deb and report what you find:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/ati/

If we can determine that the patches in this deb fix this bug, they may be candidates for backporting to Hardy.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.

I'd love to help out on this, but unfortunately the computer with that ATI card hasn't been functioning for a while due to a bust PSU. I might temporarily transfer the ATI card to the computer I'm currently using (which currently has a Radeon 9200 PRO working very well with the open source ati drivers in Hardy I'm happy to say), to test it with the latest alpha, but I don't think I'll have the time to do this in the nearest future. I might have time this weekend, but I can't promise anything.

I have the exact same thing happening with my Radeon 9500 Pro. Was fine in 8.10 (and Windows) but in 9.04 and 9.10 beta it displays the graphic glitches/artifacts. It also crashes fairly regularly when dragging Icons. I have tried the xorg-edgers xserver-xorg-ati and the problem is still there.

Is the problem still in ubuntu 9.10? I had to change to debian from 9.04 and there is not the same problem. Only little artifact in games like urbanterror.

Yes, the same problem still exists in Ubuntu 9.10. I'm using a Radeon 9800 SE. I have exactly the same problems with screen artifacts. I would be more than happy to assist in further investigations

SlimJim, let us take this to a new bug report. This one was reported by Geir 2 1/2 year ago and since he does not have the hardware any longer he is likely not so interested. Please use "ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati" to file the bug. A screenshot would be nice. If you can try Ubuntu 10.04 (beta 2 or newer) that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Note that Geir had his issue in 7.10 but "v2" only saw his since 9.04 so these might be separate issues although they appear similar.

And please don't assign bugs to other people. Developers assign bugs to themselves when they are ready to work on them.

Thanks for coming back and my apologies for acting wrong (assigning Bug to developer).
As recommended I just filed a new Bug report (Bug #565883) including screenshots.
Thanks a lot for your help!
