Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

There are incorrect statements in Totem-gstreamer package description:
Its features:
[..]
 * DVD (with menus), VCD and Digital CD (with CDDB) playback
[..]
 * DVD, VCD and OGG/OGM subtitles and languages support

totem-gstreamer never supported DVD with menus playback and DVD subtitles and languages, AFAIK VCD playback isn't correctly supported also.

This lie in totem-gstreamer package description confuses users, look at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/41335/comments/48 for example

So, please remove at least mention about DVD menus and DVD subtitles + languages support from totem-gstreamer package description.

To be able to play dvd with totem :
$ totem /media/<dvd_media>

It works, wheras using "play <dvd_media>" from Film menu doesn't work.

See bug #69968 for more details : it may be a duplicate.

This bug isn't a duplicate of bug #69968 - that bug is about totem-gstreamer player DVD playing bugs (Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins ...), while this bug is about lie in Totem-gstreamer package description.

Please don't close this bug until deb package description of totem-gstreamer package will be changed.

I can repeat what I wrote in bugreport:
Totem's gstreamer backend *never* supported DVD menus, DVD subtitles and languages ! Gstreamer developers have no idea when DVD menus and subtitles + languages will be supported, look at bug #41335 for more info. So, why we should lie in description about missing features ? Totem-xine supports DVD menus and subtitles + languages, but totem-gstreamer - not !

I prefer to have the bug fixed instead of change the description of the package to adapt it to something that doesn't work. IMHO.

It's not a bug per se, it's just a completely missing feature.

IMO, until totem-gstreamer has that feature, its description should not say that it does.

The package description is misleading and confusing for new users. It has been a direct cause of problems for most new-to-Linux power users I've met. Hell, in 7.10 I saw the description and thought "Aha! I don't have to use xine anymore... ", pain in the arse. Please fix the description.

+1 to fixing the description. It confuses people that want to search a dvd player in synaptic.

Try to search "dvd menu player" and you get totem-gstreamer in the resulting list telling it supports menus, which is not true.

the reported remote bug thread was not about inappropriate description of totem-gstreamer, but rather some specific problem of the software itself. I'll remove the reference. Feel free to report that bug separately, if you wish.

This is not a bug that could be fixed a Totem upstream as the package description is hard coded to the source package and it is not updated automatically. It may how ever be that the description has originated from some misinformation upstream in which case reporting the problem upstream may make sense.

Maybe the new resindvd plugin in GStreamer will fix menus bug before the description is updated... :-)

This is just silly. Revision 0.10.12 of gstreamer plugins bad has numerous fixes for DVD navigation. Changing the package description due to a bug which is now resolved is unnecessary work.
